DOOM’s legacy

It informed the operation of many of today’s computer games. Did it need a story? Nah. It was fine the way it was. Fourteen years later I still remember trying to jump over those chasms at the end of one episode to avoid the water below while the monsters shoot fireballs at me. And all via the keyboard. Not a single mouse click. Quake was better. Halo is better still. So is Half-Life. But only because of DOOM. And their stories are beside the point.

  1. OT – if you haven’t seen this one yet, you may enjoy it:

  2. Yes, but I understand perfectly. I do that, too. Birds of a feather, after all. They’ve become interchangeable parts. Want outrage? Go to one of them. Or both. Save money and time. I mean, you KNOW who to call. And the journos do, of course. Every time. That’s why their work is so relevant to our lives. If you consider Al and Jesse to have the answers.

  3. I got Doom 3 but my computer at the time couldn’t play it.
I didn’t mind because it came with three original versions of Doom. “Doom”, “Doom II” and “Ultimate Doom”.
I still play them, my computer won’t play my Quake disk anymore, which bums me out, but I have Doom.

  5. Well, there you go. You are fixed. Though you really ought to try the original Halo, which is another fine FPS.

  6. There’s a reason I don’t.
My roommate got Doom back in the 90s, I was working mostly weekends at the time.
I got home from work on Tuesday around 2 or so and started playing, I was late for work on Thursday at 5pm and had possibly eaten once or twice and maybe slept. I’m not sure.
I don’t need any new video games, I’ve been a video vegetable since Space Invaders came out in the 70s.

  7. I’ve been thinking about signing up for the sci fi game EVE Online, but that’s one that looks almost too immersive. I might miss more than sleep.
