Soldier-Citizen candidates

“…other than a shared furor at out-of-control spending, government takeovers and corruption, the [more than twenty Iraq and Afghanistan veteran] soldier-citizen candidates are an odd bunch. Some are officers; others are enlisted men. A surprising number were wounded in combat.

“The vast majority are running as Republicans and seem to have little if any money. They were not so much preselected by Republican operatives as pushed forward through grassroots and sometimes Tea Party support.”

Read it all.

Quang Pham out of the race

Pity. I liked Pham. Maybe he’ll run again. Meanwhile, his memoir is newly in paperback and worth a look.

Save our Seals

That’s the sign me and Mr. B. kept seeing in a yard on Balcones Drive as I took him to and from basketball practices and games at WAYA (West Austin Youth Association). I figured it was just another hysterical Greenie. We have lots of them in Austin. We finally figured out it referred to this. The sign owners will be happy. But there’s still one two more to save.

Operation eBook Drop

OEDLogoWorking to format my Indie books Leaving The Alamo and Knoxville 1863 for this program to provide free ebooks to active military, particularly those in Afghan and Iraq. It’s even “adopted” a light aircraft carrier, the Bonhomme Richard. Formatting (or, rather, deleting the old formatting) is a pain, so it’s moving slowly.

Service monkeys

I figured this had to be a joke. But apparently it is not. Monkeys for the disabled.

Army drops bayonet training

I think this has happened before. I’ll look it up when I have more time. They drop it as irrelevant to “modern” warfare. Then they bring it back as relevant to teaching aggression–for those who need to learn it. So, the next story likely will be the comeback of bayonet training.
