Holocaust and Heroism Memorial Day

Two slayings in 24 hours

The cop who was murdered Friday morning at a Wal Mart in North Austin apparently was just doing his job, not knowing that the apparently-drunken customer whom store employees had summoned him to confront was armed and ready to kill.

The case of the unarmed East Austin man who was killed by another Austin officer Thursday is unfortunately ordinary if mysterious. Austin police have lately been killing at least about one East Austin suspect a year. But the circumstances here seem to be altogether unusual.

The dead man apparently was stopped for a minor traffic violation, got out of his car and ran. So what? Why was it necessary for the cop to chase him down, get in a fight with him and then kill him? Austin Chief Art Acevado promises we’ll soon know the details. At the moment, however, it looks like an over-reaction leading to an unnecessary slaying.

Be Breitbart

Yep, one more post about Andrew Breitbart, 1969-2012.

I didn’t know this guy, who was born the year I fought in Viet Nam, but I loved his takedown of ACORN. I didn’t know until I read a few of his obits that he helped create the Drudge Report, which was first in exposing the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal when Newsweak was trying to hide it. And also the Huffington Post, which I never read and couldn’t care less about. But two out of three ain’t bad.

What I also liked about him and what makes me sorry that he worked himself into a second heart attack at age 43 is what Bill Whittle, who did know him well, says was Breitbart’s fundamental message (and the reason so many Lefty media clones shamed themselves by gloating over his death): the enemy for conservatives is not Obozo, not liberalism, not Alinsky, not Al Queda, not Iran, etc. The enemy is the media.

As someone who worked for the swamp beast for thirty-five years, I know he was right. Because if the media was as fair to all sides as it pretends to be (and which it has never been) the country would be a lot different. In all probability, for instance, Obumbles, who is as inept as any man who’s ever had the job, would not be president.

Someone else (I forget who) also quoted Breitbart as saying that because of the Internet, the media (most appropriately known as the Democrat Media Complex) no longer can have the last word. Which is one reason their political pals in Congress and at the FCC are constantly trying to devise ways to censor it.

A smart, good man, Mr. Breitbart. Alas, the good really do die young.

LTC George D. Wolfe, Jr. R.I.P.

“Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel George D. Wolfe Jr., of Ligonier, [PA], passed away at his home Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011. He was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Gettysburg, to the late Rev. George D. Wolfe and Vernie Warner Wolfe….

“George was a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a brother and a friend, but one role that he was especially proud of was that of Army Infantryman.

“He was a career serviceman and a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran. He served in many units and battalions, but the one closest to his heart was the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division….Interment will follow at a future date in Ft. Benning, Ga….”

As a young captain, Wolfe commanded Infantry Officer’s Candidate School class 504-68 at Ft. Benning, of which I was a graduate in June, 1968. He had talked me out of quitting, when the daily stress of the six-month program finally wore me down.

Although I was commissioned in Armor, I fought in Vietnam as an Infantry lieutenant, and like Lieutenant Colonel Wolfe, I have always been proud of being an Infantryman.

The death of American blogging

The SOPA the greedy pols are about to pass, for the benefit of the Hollyweird types who have lined the politicians’ pockets with bribes, could make this among the last few posts I link to copyrighted material. Why?

The fine print of the law says sites that distribute copyrighted content could be subject to summary censorship… But it also encompasses any sites that LINK to copyrighted content…”

Like the link above. And Instapundit, who does very little else. In fact, you could say this new law will be the death of American blogging as we have known it. Geez, Louise, could that possibly be a coincidence?

UPDATE:  I’m sure it’s no coincidence at all that the Leftist media is bankrolling some of the SOPA bribes. They love the blogs so.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Holocaust documentary

The Hollywood director was already famous for his movie Lifeboat when, in 1945, he joined a group of documentary filmmakers accompanying the American and British soldiers who liberated the more than 200 camps the Nazis devoted to murdering 11 million people—6 million of them Jews.

The “carnage and desolation” has “to be seen to be believed,” says the unidentified narrator of Hitchcock’s  53 minute film. And so it is. No sensibility is spared. The film is so grisly that it was suppressed for years by the British war office. What makes it so horrible is its pitiless recording of the mass-grave burial of thousands of naked starvation victims, none of them ever identified, by their Nazi SS captors at the direction of angry Allied soldiers.

Parts of the film finally were aired in 1985 under the title “Memory of the Camps.” But Google Video is making it available in its disquieting entirety for the first time. You will share the shock (though certainly not the guilt) of the well-fed  German burgomeisters who were rounded up from local towns and made to stand and watch. If you can view the whole thing in one go, you’re braver than me. But I finally got through it, and it was worth it, especially for the contempt it generates for Holocaust deniers, Muslim and otherwise.

The real population bomb

The imagined population bomb of the past quarter-century explodes, peopling the planet with far more mouths than it can feed and increasing carbon footprints until they plaster every available surface, the resulting global warming raising sea levels, burning up crops, etc.

That’s the Green fantasy, which pols like because it allows them to tax and spend and hire more cronies for enforcement of their new government rules that supposedly will be our salvation. (Yeah, like sugar-filled, fat-free food.)

Spengler (David P. Goldman) has crunched the numbers and gathered the studies and found that, surprise, surprise, the truth is the opposite of the Green version: the real population bomb is going to implode and take more than a few countries (Germany, Japan, France, Greece, Turkey, Iran) with it into extinction, and all within the lifetimes of our children. (Those of us who have children.)

“Population decline is the elephant in the world’s living room…the social life of most developed countries will break down within two generations…The world faces a danger more terrible than the worst Green imaginings…For the first time in history, the birth rate of the whole developed world is well below replacement, and a significant part of it has passed the demographic point of no return.”

Congratulate yourselves, all you people who prefer dogs and cats to children. So far, the USA and Israel are likely to survive this one, much to the chagrin of their bitter enemies. Funny how truth is always more interesting than fantasy. You can pick up a copy of Goldman’s new book on this subject, How Civilizations Die: And Why Islam is Dying Too, here.
