I love Michael Ramirez’s cartoons. Don’t get enough of them? Go here for the collection.

Israel’s struggle with media bias

Israel shot itself in the foot in several ways last summer when it responded to a Hez provocation by going to war in Lebanon. But the MSM did the rest, becoming a propaganda organ for Hez, according to a new Harvard study showing how…

"…the trajectory of the media [shifted] from objective observer to fiery advocate, becoming in fact a weapon of modern warfare. The paper also shows how an open society, Israel, is victimized by its own openness and how a closed sect, Hezbollah, can retain almost total control of the daily message of journalism and propaganda."

This is something new. Almost in the "when pigs fly" category.

Guilt trip

Some folks think that white guilt will propel Barack Obama into the White House:

"Mr Obama would be a Democratic president, and with no war blood on his hands."

I think this is plain silly, not the least because Al Q is at war with us, and Obama doesn’t want to fight. It’s also a case of the MSM talking to itself, which it often does, mistaking its colleagues for the voice of the people.

Conversion: one heart at a time

“No matter what you think of the war, or what has happened here, you cannot be around the soldiers and not be completely affected. They are amazing people, and they represent themselves and the Army better than anyone could ever imagine.” — a Spanish journalist.

Good stuff worth a read.

Courting defeat

The Dems, it seems, truly want another Vietnam defeat in Iraq, now that they’ve attached departure dates to the refunding of the campaign. Presumably Bush will veto, and the Dems haven’t the votes to override. Some conservatives think this will energize the Republican base, but I wonder. The Dems could keep this up until the military runs out of money.

Pultizer prize winning author (and old neighbor in another part of town) Lawrence Wright ("The Looming Tower") says democratization of the Middle East may be our only hope to defeat al Q and its religious zealots and wannabees. But that it won’t be pretty, and that leaving Iraq too soon could convulse the region. But with House Speaker Pelosi skipping two meetings with the commanding general in Iraq, and Senate Majority Leader Reid saying the war is lost, it looks like the Dems either disagree or don’t care.

UPDATE  Crazy Politico points out that a veto isn’t all Bush can do. He can find other ways to pay for the war: "Bill Clinton couldn’t get the GOP controlled Congress to pass what he wanted for funding for Kosovo, so he signed executive orders halting certain defense contract work, and shifting the money to fund troops."

Wearing red on Fridays

My favorite airline, Southwest, in recognition of its many employees serving in the military, is promoting the Wear-Red-on-Fridays for the troops campaign:

"We at the LUV airline are a patriotic bunch. We LUV our country; we give America the Freedom to fly; and we support our troops who fight for our country’s many freedoms. One way we express our LUV is by encouraging our Employees to wear red shirts on Fridays to show our support for the troops."

Some of us thought of Southwest as the National Airline of Texas, before it expanded across the country. Others would have pegged Braniff, before it went bankrupt. Southwest is popular for its no-crash policy. They haven’t had one yet.

Tuesday randoms

Ever notice how the headlines on stories from Iraq are always about how many more Americans have died? Never about how many more "insurgents," or (fat chance) "terrorists," have bought it in contact with American GI’s on patrol or otherwise in battle. Why, you’d almost think the headline writers were working for the enemy. Naw. More likely, for Harry Reid.

Garbage wars, part 3: Ever since the city of Austin broke our garbage can lid with their automated truck three weeks ago, we’ve been waiting for them to come and replace the big plastic can. Called three times in the past three weeks and gotten nothing but promises–always, oddly, promised within 24 hours. Nothing’s happened yet. Now we’re playing with real garbage, which they did not pick up at all last week. Yesterday they promised to come get it today. Haven’t shown up yet. By 7:48 p.m. it was clear they weren’t coming. Again.

To mow or not to mow: Supposed to rain big this afternoon and tonight. So should I hustle and get the backyard mowed this morning, knowing that all that rain will make the grass grow quicker than usual and I’ll be back mowing again by the weekend? Or let it go until after the rain? I’m letting it go. No surprise there, right?

Back to normal. The Site Meter went through the roof yesterday with collateral hits from The Fat Guy, who got the real Instalanch–i.e. thousands of uniques from one post picked up by Instapundit putting down Compact Fluorescent Bulbs. I got about a hundred of the uniques who used Scott’s recent link to RoboCow, such that the total for the day here topped out at 162, about twice normal in recent months. But it’s over. About ten minutes ago I notice the difference between today and yesterday on the meter: yesterday it was about 60 at this time. Today, it’s 12.
