Oh, let’s do call them fascists

They’ve certainly earned it, says classics and war historian Victor Davis Hanson.

"…Islamists, as is true of all fascists, privilege their own particular creed of true believers by harkening back to a lost, pristine past, in which the devout were once uncorrupted by modernism.

"True, bin Laden’s mythical Volk doesn’t bath in the clear icy waters of the Rhine untouched by the filth of the Tiber; but rather they ride horses and slice the wind with their scimitars in service of a soon to be reborn majestic world of caliphs and mullahs. Osama bin Laden sashaying in his flowing robes is not all that different from the obese Herman Goering in reindeer horns plodding around his Karinhall castle with suspenders and alpine shorts."

That NIE report

The other side of that April National Intelligence Estimate, according to In From the Cold, which has its own annonymous intel sources. You know, the side the MSM did not report in the five-month-old news it rolled out just in time for the impending Congressional elections. Wonder why not.

"In one of its early paragraphs, the estimate notes progress in the struggle against terrorism, stating the U.S.-led efforts have ‘seriously damaged Al Qaida leadership and disrupted its operations.’ Didn’t see that in the NYT article.

"Or how about this statement, which–in part–reflects the impact of increased pressure on the terrorists: ‘A large body of reporting indicates that people identifying themselves as jihadists is increasing…however, they are largely decentralized, lack a coherent strategy and are becoming more diffuse.’ Hmm…doesn’t sound much like Al Qaida’s pre-9-11 game plan."

UPDATE  Via Instapundit, a Robert Kagan column in the WaPo questioning the NIE reports: "Since the Iraq war started, there have not been any successful terrorist attacks against the United States. That doesn’t mean the threat has diminished because of the Iraq war, but it does place the burden of proof on those who argue that it has increased."

LATER The NIE has been declassified. Smart move. Let’s see what, if anything, was exaggerated. Go here for a pdf on the key judgements of the April report.

FINALLY (I swear) Instapudit’s analysis of the material is intense: "While we should fire the leakers on general principles, we should probably also fire whoever wrote this — for producing a meaningless document full of empty bureaucratic twaddle. If the jihadists win, they’ll have more prestige! And they will probably use the internets! Do tell. Jesus Christ, if this is the quality of intelligence we’re getting, no wonder we haven’t won yet."

The O man sleeps with the worms

That’s the latest "dead Osama" report, this time blaming typhoid in a remote mountain cave. I rather think, and have thought ever since the O man stopped making propaganda videos in the video age, that he got his in the gunfight at Tora Bora in late 2001.

But the curious thing is the typhoid cause makes a kind of grisly good sense. Typhoid fever has been the major killer of campaigning soldiers for thousands of years, due to poor sanitation in camp.

UPDATE John at Powerline doesn’t believe it and corrects me on the last time the O man was seen on video, which was late 2004 when he endorsed Kerry for president. I forgot about that. Pretty amusing.

Turn of the screw for al Q

"Coalition forces in Iraq have suddenly received the manpower equivalent of three light infantry divisions…and now have a huge edge over al-Qaeda in al-Anbar province. How did this happen? Tribal leaders in the largely Sunni province on the Syrian border got together and signed an agreement to raise a tribal force of 30,000 fighters to take on foreign fighters and terrorists," reports StrategyPage.com.

"These leaders have thrown in with the central government in Baghdad. This is a decisive blow to al Qaeda, which has been desperately trying to fight off an Iraqi government that is getting stronger by the week. Not only are the 30,000 fighters going to provide more manpower, but these tribal fighters know the province much better than American troops – or the foreign fighters fighting for al Qaeda. Also, this represents just over 80 percent of the tribes in al-Anbar province now backing the government."

The ‘increasingly popular war.’

Army recruiting is up, well up, better than any year since 1997, which some would find a surprise, though I do not. I am surprised that the polls are starting to register an increasing willingness to ride the Iraq campaign out for what it’s worth.

"It will be interesting to watch the news stories now. Remember all those articles with the words ‘increasingly unpopular war’? Will we see reports now with the words ‘increasingly popular war’?"

I wouldn’t bet on it.

Hugo.JPG

Hugo’s comic-book diplomacy the other day at the UN (oh, the sulfur) would have embarrassed my aunt and uncle who worked for one its agricultural programs in Tawian in the 1940s. He’s a good example (along with his lunatic buddy from Tehran) why some of us today call the organization "the dictator’s club" and wish we’d finally get an American president with the guts to throw them out of New York. Let them set up their pathetic carnival of mendacity and prevarication in Somalia, or better yet, Iran.

Let ’em have nukes

Ted Turner, maverick broadcaster, big-time sailor and ex-husband of Jane Fonda, tells al Reuters we should let the Iranians have their nukes.

"’They’re a sovereign state," Turner said of Iran. ‘We have 28,000. Why can’t they have 10? We don’t say anything about Israel–they’ve got 100 of them approximately–or India or Pakistan or Russia. And really, nobody should have them.

"’They aren’t usable by any sane person.’"

Uh, I think you hit the point of concern, Ted. You just took the long way of getting to it.
