Night Patrol

Compelling video report on a night patrol into Lebanon by Regiment 931 of Israel’s Nahal Brigade. Well, I had it for a while, then the link broke at On The Face, where you will have to go and hunt for the post under the innocuous title: Something to Watch. Check that. Even that general link is denying access from this site. Don’t know what I did. Could be because my trackback was rejected? Or the author of OTF decided I was not of sufficient caliber, or something. Too bad. It’s a great video, if you can get to the site on your own. Google it. Or try Israelly Cool’s link, they’re allowing this site so far. So go there and clink on their Lisa Goldman link, which is trackbacked to OTF. I’m missing something here in the great blogospheric game. It’s worth the hassle. Will even help clear up the mystery of those showercap helmet covers some Israeli troops wear. They must work in camoflaging a shooter. Because no one self-respecting infantryman would wear them otherwise. They make one look like a mushroom.

Hez takes on the Aussie Navy

hezbollah-sunk-ship.jpg

What’s wrong with this picture? No, it’s not more fauxtography, not exactly. But it’s not what it purports to be, on an Iranian-run Hez web site, i.e. Hez’s destruction of an Israeli warship. Bagel Blogger found a story in the Australian Herald Sun newspaper showing that it is, rather, a photo of the controlled destruction of a decommisioned Australian destroyer– the HMAS Torrens, off the western coast of Australia in 1998.

But why not? Hez took on the U.S. Treasury years ago.

"This scene and dozens more like it flashed around the planet. Only one thing was missing—the thin wire security strip that runs from top to bottom of a genuine US$100 bill. The money Hezbollah was passing was counterfeit, as should have been evident to anybody who studied the photographs with due care."

One war

As the Town Hall dot com ad puts it, When was the last time you saw a top American general interviewed at length by the MSM? Hugh Hewitt interviews Gen. John Abizaid, of Central Command, who brings us up to date. The transcript is here.

"HH: Is it all one war, General? Afghanistan, Iran, the Hezbollah-Israeli battle?

"JA: Well, from where I sit, it’s all connected. And whether it’s one war or not can be debated from a political perspective. But from a military perspective, as I look at it, the…all of the lines lead back to one or two sources. They either lead back to Sunni-sponsored extremism, or to Shiia-sponsored Iranian extremism. And sometimes, on occasional points in the battlefield, they even cooperate with one another. So it’s certainly connected. No doubt in my mind."

Kisses from Iran

"If you want to have good relations with the Iranian people in the future, you should acknowledge the right and the might of the Iranian people, and you should bow and surrender to the might of the Iranian people."

Boomers

Just what Israel needs to offer its own MAD in case the mullahs really are as mad as their current Prez.

"In the face of Iran’s race to obtain nuclear power, Israel signed a contract with Germany last month to buy two Dolphin-class submarines that will, according to foreign reports, provide superior second-strike nuclear capabilities, The Jerusalem Post has learned."

UPDATE AP reports Aug. 25: "A deal under which Germany will sell Israel two submarines foresees the vessels being delivered starting in 2010, and they are not being equipped to fire nuclear weapons, an official said Friday." Israel already has three of them.

The Apocolypse files

Isn’t that what we’ve been told might be on the minds of the Mad Mullahs for tomorrow, the 22nd?

"Be Prepared to Empty the Fridge: A freezer packed with dry ice will stay cold for days, but it’s tough to find dry ice at the local corner store. So if you’ve been without power for more than four hours, start emptying the fridge now. Even if the power does come back soon, chances are your food won’t, and you don’t want to let food melt in the freezer or, even worse, rot in the appliance. Cleaning that up is not a mess you want to deal with."

That’s for blackouts, with more here, assuming that the worst to happen might be a widespread, long-lasting power outage. Tho, to hit Texans, the jihadis will need to know, first-off, that Texas is on its own grid. And don’t wear your turban and robes when you make the hit. Y’all stand out way too much here. Tho, I suppose, you’re not likely to make the trip and your hired help doesn’t dress than way.

UPDATE At 2:12 p.m. CST, on the 22nd, all is quiet on the Austin front. No sightings of the 12th Imam yet (or Texas A&M’s 12th man, for that matter), just some diplobabble from the Iranians on their allegedly negotiable hunt for nukes.

“Over hill, over dale…”

Technology is putting the field artillery out of business, at least in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Strategypage.com, and the army is shifting the cannon cockers to patrolling, road blocks and other security details.

"Maybe a third of the guns and rocket launchers [in Iraq] are actually put to work. Most of the 155mm howitzers are self-propelled (the M-109, which looks like a tank), as are all the MLRS launchers. The MLRS has been particularly popular for the last six months, since the new GPS guided rocket became available. This fall, a GPS guided 155mm shell (the Excalibur) will enter service, giving the M-109s more to do. In most operations, unguided 155mm shells are too inaccurate to use because the fighting is in urban areas. The Excalibur is a different story…

"On the down side, the GPS guided shells and rockets mean that much fewer shells and rockets are needed. It’s pretty much, ‘one target, one shell.’ With these "smart shells," the number of rounds needed will decline by over 90 percent. That will result in fewer M-109 howitzers and MLRS launchers needed. So for the duration of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the artillery troops won’t be working much with artillery."
