Mr B’s excellent weekend

He’s somewhere on the coast, with three friends and the parents of one of them, presumably beach combing, if not salt water splashing.

Rockport? Port Aransas? Corpus? Strange not to know, but that’s the way it is with teenagers. I was lucky to get the parents names and cell numbers. Didn’t think to ask about the destination until he was gone.

Just now he texts that they’re on Matagorda Bay, but he’s unsure of any towns around. Checking the map, and the most likely route, looks like he’s near Port Lavaca or Port O’Connor.

The Expanse 2

Roughly a year after watching the first season of this syfy concoction, I have embarked on season 2. It has three more episodes than 1.

The graphics, the hardware and the CGI are still cool. And the actors the same—even to the introduction of Bobby Draper, who is comelier than my mind’s eye view of her from the books, but that’s show biz.

Still worth the pittance it costs, $2.99 per 40-minute episode. And I see that it is making enough money from its 600,000 fans to go into production for a season 3. All to the good.

Waiting for Season 7

I finally finished watching all there is (so far) of Game of Thrones, that is up to the end of Season 6. I had to laugh at the explosive demise of the High Sparrow and Co. But I will miss Queen Margery.

Also appropriate was Arya’s dispatch of Walder Frey—a final Stark salute.

All of which is sufficiently different from the books, but no matter. As long as I can keep both plots separate in my head I’ll be okay.

Now July needs to hurry up and get here. Although I have a problem. I don’t want to subscribe to HBO but how else to get the episodes? Thru Amazon?

Double standards

Muslim “rights” paramount

So says a Hawaii federal judge in a stunning put-down of President Trump’s second temporary ban—our robed rulers have spoken. Not even a president can gainsay them.

“The hold is aimed at the March 6 Executive Order 13780 which carefully cited legal and constitutional, plus national security reasons, for its temporary stop to the inflow of refugees from six conflict-prone Muslim countries, pending the development of new screening procedure to exclude migrants who may subsequently attack Americans.”

Trump should stop tip-toeing around the issue and ban all refugees henceforth.

Ban auto-play video, please

Web creator Tim Berners-Lee on taking back control of the Web:

“We must work together with web companies to strike a balance that puts a fair level of data control back in the hands of people, including the development of new technology such as personal ‘data pods’ if needed and exploring alternative revenue models such as subscriptions and micropayments.”

That’s just for a start. But nowhere on his list do I see banning auto-play video, which I would think would be a necessary first step to getting back our control of data.

SXSW goes “progressive”

The former music festival, locally famed for its traffic snarls and street crowd scenes, is this year focusing on anti-Trump rhetoric:

“SXSW’s chief programming officer Hugh Forrest praised the political slant on this year’s festival.

“’There is definitely a degree of politics or political focus that may not have been there in previous years,’ said Forrest. ‘We hope people walk away with a little better understanding of issues and the players driving the issues.’

“Forrest, who voted for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, previously claimed to be ‘grieving’ following President Trump’s victory in November. He also claimed to be excited about SXSW’s ‘role’ in ‘paving a more progressive path to the future.'”

SXSW claims to have music acts this year from Somalia and Libya, countries on President Trump’s travel ban, and otherwise is promoting Islam’s fight against Trump.
