Search traffic

Sad but true. For all I imagine the reasons might be, just five queries drive most of my search traffic, according to Compete Analytics:

* Texas Longhorn Pumpkin Carving at 26.97 percent. Probably this one.

* French invasion of Mexico at 23.34 percent. Yes, I remember this.

* Portable spittoons with 21.45 percent. I remember now.

* Pictures of John McCain as an aviator for 15.93 percent. I remember it, but I can’t find it.

* Air Force pilot eject over Rockies winter survival at 12.15 percent. Huh?

I didn’t remember posting anything on the last one. Indeed, I never did. But I did post several times on the air force, eject, the Rockies, winter and survival.

Remember this one?

Osprey.jpg

The biggies in the MSM only write about the tilt-rotor when it crashes, sort of like the way they usually cover the war–casualties only. But the maligned Osprey is operational now with the Marines–who have two tilt-rotor squadrons, VMM-162 and VMM-263–while Air Force special operations, which recently received the first of thirty, is still testing and developing operational tactics, according to one of the littlesies, the Pensacola News Journal

UPDATE  I am reminded that University of Texas engineering professor Hans Mark, who had a hand in the early development of this thing, used to tout it as a reliever of highway congestion. It would pick up airline passengers at a stop near their homes and whisk them to the airport. It’s a lot faster in airplane configuration than a helicopter. Mark also had something to do with the new Airborne Laser, which has yet to see operational service. I also posted about it here. I don’t recall any civilian apllication.

Trail to recovery

Two Air Force guys, both pararescueman–but one of them medically retired after being severely wounded in Iraq– are hiking the entire, 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia. In part to become two of the fewer than 500 people to do the whole thing, and also to publicize a fundraiser for disabled veterans. Pictures, a map and full details at the link. As of the 26th, they’d reached Staunton, Virginia.

IAF Video

Wish I could figure out how to post this good Israeli air force video, but will have to settle for the link to Yoni the Blogger. As he says it’s in Hebrew but easy enough to figure out what this two-seat F-16 ground crew is talking about as they re-arm the bird — especially when they inscribe one of the bombs to the intended recipient.
