Goodbye to the P.O.

Former newspaper colleague turned author Mike Cox has this good column at TexasEscapes about how, because email is killing the post office, it’s time to remember some of the fabled ones.

Because they will, in all probability,  soon be vanishing. Strangely, Mike leaves out the story of how Dime Box got its name. Aided, in part, allegedly, by its onetime lack of a post office.

Hacking Sarah’s email a federal case now

The "Save Barry" frenzy continues… Glad to see the FBI and Secret Service are hunting for the hackers who invaded Gov. Palin’s official email account, exposing phone numbers and a few personal details of family members. Considering the federal gumshoes are not renown for efficiency–the shrinkingly-credible Associated Press already is stonewalling them–it’s a relief to know the perps were  was dumb enough to brag about their his crime, thereby leaving plenty of clues.

UPDATE: The apparent hacker, the 20-year-old son of a Tennessee Democrat State Rep, seems to have been caught. Of course it would be a Democrat involved. Gerard van der Leun thinks Sarah should score political points by forgiving him, since the culprit will be prosecuted anyway.

UPDATE II:  Now it’s gone murky again, as the state rep denies reports he ever said his son was involved. Then, the murk cleared, as the FBI got a warrant and searched the kid’s residence.

Spam-a-rama

Comment and trackback and email spam is really getting out of hand. It’s becoming a fulltime job just to delete all the comment and trackback garbage I get on this site. Other bloggers have been complaining about it, too, lately, and we’re not alone.

"There are 62 billion spam messages sent every day, IronPort says, up from 31 billion last year. Now, spam accounts for three of every four e-mails sent, according to another anti-spam firm, MessageLabs. Image spam is a big part of the resurgence of unwanted e-mail. By using pictures instead of words in their messages, spammers are able to evade filters designed to detect traditional text-based ads."

Image spam I have been spared so far. Stock-promotion email spam I’m used to, also pharmaceuticals promotions in comment and trackback spam. Movable Type catches a lot of it, but some slips through. But lately I’ve been getting email spam disguised as news, with a current events subject line, and an exe attachment. It’s a chore to clear it all out.
