Ninety-four years later: The fifty

“The first finished version of this machine gun – the Browning M2 – was completed in 1921 and intended at the time to be used against tanks and aircraft. However, the gun would turn out to be a phenomenally rugged, reliable, and effective gun in a multitude of roles. It remains in American military use today virtually unchanged, and also with many other nations worldwide.”

My old MAT (Mobile Advisory Team) in Vietnam in 1969 had one mounted in the back of a jeep. Worked fine so long as you didn’t squeeze off too many long bursts at a time through its 45-inch barrel. Then the vibrations would snap the welds on the plate holding its pedestal mount to the jeep. Not to mention shattering your eardrums.

Can’t imagine its tripod-mounted ground role. In WW2 they’d mount two or three of them inside the wings of fighter planes to fight other planes or strafe troops on the ground. I expect it to be around for another century. Awesome.

Teacher confiscated Mr B’s iPhone

One of Mr. B.’s teachers called Mrs. Charm (who’s still in the hospital but may finally come home this afternoon) and said after three warnings to stop texting, and he still wouldn’t stop, she he confiscated his iPhone.

Requires a parent coming to the school to get it back for him. Ha ha. No chance today. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe.

It’s going to be amusing watching him discover email. He has prided himself on never using email (claims “his” generation does not do email), not even reading what other people email him. Now it’s that or we’ll see him acting like a heroin addict without his daily dose. Stay tuned. Heh.

UPDATE:  He was classically indignant. It was “my property,” etc. Then he went to bed early for the first time in living memory. No phone, no fun, apparently. Wish they’d confiscate it more often.

MORE:  Silly me. He had his old iPhone 5 to use in bed. At least for the tunes stored therein. No texting of course as it wasn’t wi-fi or cell tower capable. He picked up the six this morning at school, saving me a trip.

The climate change shuck

Our Barry Hussein even got the Pope to chime in on the horrors of climate change. What they never mention is that while we will be cutting back on our use of the electricity we can no longer afford, Asia is plowing ahead with coal.

“The net outcome of this charade, in my opinion, is Western politicians are committing to skyrocketing energy prices and unworkable renewables schemes, inanely celebrating that everyone is onboard with their lunacy, while at the same time, China and Japan are busy helping their Asian neighbours make coal power even cheaper.

Barry, apparently, will be retiring in temperature-steady Hawaii while the Pope gets back behind the fortress walls of the Vatican where who knows what occurs in the energy game.

Surely not austerity. Austerity is not for the elites. Austerity is for the little people.

Mrs. Charm comes home today

She’s been in Seton Hospital for ten days now. The first four were for her second round of high-dose chemo for her recurrent lymphoma cancer. The next five were to recover from what was initially diagnosed to be a probable seizure but has since come to be regarded as a particularly intense version of “chemo brain.”

So bad on Monday and Tuesday that her Austin onocologist considers it a show stopper. Either she’ll get a smaller dose for the next round or she’ll get a different brand. Of course whether there’ll be a third round at all depends on testing to be done Oct. 6 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

This last day of her Seton stint will be spent (as began last night) charming the nurses down to their toes. It’s good for Seton she’ll be coming home this afternoon. Otherwise there’d soon be a mob of nurses making pilgrimages to her room.

UPDATE:  And then the oncologist decided her potassium and magnesium counts were too low and she might need a platelets infusion by Sunday morning. So she’s still in the hospital.

MORE:  Finally came home Monday evening. Probably wishes she was back there as my cooking cannot compete with hospital fare.

Pol drinks from Pope’s used water glass

The irreligious will find it “kinda weird” as Insty headlines what has turned into a commenter marathon on supernatural religion. And I suppose it is, up to a point.

But Catholics aren’t the only ones who do this. Jews, too, venerate the objects touched/used by famous rabbis, pilgrimage to their graves and pray there. Including the Kotel (the western wall of the Temple Mount) where the old joke is that prayer is a local call.

A joke that’s passing on now that fewer understand what a “local call” is.
