Michigan police have bayonets

“What part of the force continuum do bayonet charges lie on?”

“Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation; the last arguments to which kings resort.” —American patriot Patrick Henry

Watch yourself out there. Officer Friendly is nuts.

The Democrat numbers game

Just 5.9 percent unemployment. Isn’t that rosy? Just what you’d expect pre-election from the bureaucrats and their Democrat overlords.

If you don’t believe it, you might be more concerned that a 36-year-high of 62.7 million Americans are not participating in the labor force. Home watching Oprah?

Those Democrat “disability” checks just keep on comin’, masking the true extent of our disastrous economy and its decreasing opportunities for the industrious young.

Friends in need

Blog friends here and in Israel have offered their prayers and, for those who don’t believe, good thoughts and good advice. Three (so far) of Mrs. Charm’s work friends have brought cooked meals and lingered for morale-building visits. And, of course, the good family phone calls and emails keep rolling in.

We watched (and participated in) this process with one of Mrs. C.’s best friends, who died of a brain tumor several years ago, after lengthy, debilitating bouts of surgery, chemo and radiation. All to no avail. Her advice then was to accept all offers gratefully when first made. Because they might fade away as the well try to distance themselves from the unwell. Indeed, some who faded away were among her oldest friends.

Which is not criticism, really, just reality. The healthy understandably do not like being confronted with their own mortality which they know down deep inside is sure to get them, too, in the end. I think it’s somewhat easier for a combat veteran, having faced mortality every day for months at a stretch. It became a habit to think about it daily ever after.

I remember bringing jelly beans to a good guy dying of AIDS back in the 80s when I was reporting the epidemic for the daily. It pained him to chew and swallow the colorful bean-shaped candies but he’d always loved them and he wanted them at his end. He died a few days later, happier, I hope, for his last handfuls of jelly beans.

UPDATE: Twenty-two additional work friends plan to bring cooked meals and visit with Mrs. C, in a morale-building display of their affection for her.

Stop Ebola in Texas: Wash your hands

“Washing your hands and avoiding occasions of exposure will help you more than all the public assurances in the world. If you suspect infection, do your duty and turn yourself in. Odd word that: duty. But duty is what saved the herd in history; saved the herd in World War 2. The very same duty the Left laughs at and lumps in the same dustbin of history as that 100 year old document that nobody reads any more. And science. Not affirmative action or quota or “committed” science. But science, period. Duty and science, not amulets, voodoo, talk shows, assurances, security theater or muted alarms can stop Ebola.” —Richard Fernandez, PJMedia.

And stay the hell out of Dallas.

UPDATE:  Patient Zero died Oct. 8. Now to wait and see if he infected others. Meanwhile, at the Texas State Fair, even Big Tex has ebola on his “mind.”

The Downton Abbey Economy

It’s been said that the rise of the tech plutocrats of Silicon Valley (Google, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn) and the simultaneous decline of the American middle class is pushing us toward an economy of the rich and the poor who will earn their daily bread servicing the rich.

SNAP Kitchen, our pretty-well-off Northwest Hills neighborhood’s latest retailer, seems to be a good example of services catering to people who presumably can afford $2 for a deviled egg.

Hey, they’re spicy (Jalepeno, black pepper, etc.)! And cage-free. Whoop-de-do.

SNAP Kitchen (“fresh, healthy take-away”) also sells beef that’s “grass-fed” and produce that’s “conscientiously” picked. Mrs. C. said the latter maybe means they think good thoughts as they snip tomatoes from the vine and pull the carrots from the soil.

(They probably don’t realize that SNAP is the federal acronym for food stamps: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.)

San Francisco (bedroom community of the tech grandees) comes to Austin is what I call it. But the Downton Abbey Economy also works. While it isn’t good for a democracy not to have a middle class, it could be lucrative for the skilled journeyman. And as long as the Abbey keeps it civil, there won’t be any sabotaging of the home heating/AC (the electrical system, appliances and the plumbing) the Abbey doesn’t know how to maintain.

Eat Mor Chikin

One reason your beef and pork prices are going up at the grocery is because Obozo and his green cronies are conspiring to raise electricity bills to fight non-existent climate change. The grocery is passing the higher cost on.

But Andy at MyOldRV, whose wholesaler recently alerted him to rising beef and pork prices even without the grocery middleman, has discovered another problem that’s apparently going under-reported.

“Cattle herds were depleted over the last two years as ranchers were forced to sell due to the drought. There was some sort of virus introduced into the pigs starting in North Carolina that they think came from China. It has since spread across the country and killed millions of piglets. I never saw it reported on the news.”

So, like the billboards say, “Eat Mor Chickin.” It’s likely to be the cheapest.

The Eric Holder Sewage Plant

“Holder will be remembered as the most corrupt Attorney General in history and as the man who did the most to violate the civil rights of American citizens since the late FBI Director J Edgar Hoover. Despite his misconduct Hoover got a building named after him so at some future date I guess we’ll see the ‘Eric Holder Sewage Plant’ or some such construct. The Democratic and Republican crime gangs afford each other these little courtesies, after all.”

Well, so far as we know, Eric is not a cross-dresser like the old boss of Fart, Barf & Itch. But, then, there’s been no Republican Watergate to spur the recalcitrant snooze media into reporting on Eric’s private life. They have enough trouble reporting his public one. Don’t miss the photo at the link above of Eric probing his nose for a booger.

UPDATE:  Holder was just the latest incompetent legal crony to hold the office. And the fact that he is one of the president’s closest friends tells you all you need to know about Wormtongue.
