Snoopy’s great adventures

For those who follow the adventures of my Israeli pal Snoopy the Goon and wonder where he’s gotten to the last few days, he’s in the outback of Australia with the Mrs, about 800 km from Brisbane.

“We are in Australia with our daughter, gallivanting in the boonies and photographing birds and other animals. I hope we’ll survive the experience – the regime reminds most of all an army boot camp, the chiefs are really fanatics of bird photography.

“The country is amazing in all respects, wildlife being only one of them. It appears that Australia is a nanny state second to none. A lot of rules, regulations etc. Cigarettes, for instance, are not on display in the places that sell them, the procedure is somewhat furtive, like buying narcotics…

“…and here is another curious item: the tipping in restaurants and other situations is not a done thing here.  I am not a sociologist, but the result is terrible service in the restaurants. At least this is an obvious one. Slow, mix-up with orders, no attention to the timing of the dishes etc. During a breakfast in a similarly upscale eatery one of our group didn’t get his order at all, in spite of the waiter been reminded twice. When our guide went to complain, he was told that the kitchen is ‘very busy’!

“We were told that the waiters’ salaries are good enough so they don’t rely on tips. You can easily deduce the result.”

Black Lives Don’t Matter to Black Lives Matter

But that’s okay with the Ford Foundation which gave them millions in funding to protest against the police. And, as it happens, against Israel as well.

Worship security

In the “new” America, created by eight years of a Democratic administration that favors Muslims over other immigrants, armed security for Christian and Jewish worship services is becoming a priority in some places.

This case is harassment, but coming a few months after the San Bernadino, CA, terror murders (the worst in American history before the Orlando gay bar killings upped the record toll), the threat was clear.

Jews around the country already are readying themselves to protect their congregations during the early-to-mid October high holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Of course my experience in all this is local, but I’m not going to give any specific names or place details on the Internet.

Will only say that meetings are being convened with police and private security firms and volunteers are being sought to keep the costs down. Interiors and exteriors will be patrolled by armed but unobtrusive security. Perimeters, inside and out, likewise will be secured. Large purses or other bags will be inspected, in as friendly a manner as possible. Persons unknown to the volunteers of a particular congregation will be engaged, as politely as possible, wherever they appear, to determine their intentions. I plan to be among the local volunteers.

It’s a pity, really, that any of this should be necessary. In America, of all places. But, thanks to the Democrats, many of them atheists who couldn’t care less about religion, in 2016, so it is.

Go get ’em, Boris

Gotta love Britain’s new foreign minister Boris Johnson, if for no other reason than his sharp jabs at President Penandphone and the Hildabeast.

Of the former, Boris has called him a “part-Kenyan president [with an] ancestral dislike of the British Empire.” But his best swipe was reserved for Slick Willie’s cuckold whom Boris has likened to “a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital.”

Shomerim

I might not be supposed to post this, but the shomerim are not a secret society and I’m not really bragging, just mentioning something gentiles may find interesting about Judaism, historical and contemporary.

Bit tired this morning after being up most of the night. I pulled my shomer gig from midnight to 3 a.m. for a woman I never met. She was a member of my synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom, but there are too many members for me to have even seen all of them.

She died the other day and was to be buried within 48 hours. So Beth Shalom required shomerim (guardians/watchers) to sit with her in her plain (unpainted and unadorned) pine casket at Cook Walden Funeral home. I always take the midnight to 3 a.m. shift because few others want it or have time for it and being retired it’s pretty easy for me.

The ritual is thousands of years old. A matter of respect for the dead. Originally intended to keep insects and animals away from the deceased especially since, in Israel, no coffins were/are used. Remains are wrapped in linen and put in the earth. In the U.S., of course, the funeral lobby long ago paid off pols to require caskets. So the ritual is symbolic. But the respect is the same. And observant Jews use the next best thing to linen: a plain, pine casket.

You pull your shift of 2 to 2.5 hours on the premises of the funeral home, some of it in a special room with the casket, reading from Psalms aloud. You can take breaks away from the casket, get coffee and read other material on the Jewish way of death and dying. I needed two cups to stay completely awake until my successor arrived at 3 a.m.

Different shomerim believe different things. I believe the soul is a form of energy which stays with the body at least part of the time before burial, still trying to adjust to the fact of death and the soul’s eternal, immortal life. So part of the reason for the shomer’s presence is to be reassuring.

As shomerim say, none of us are thanked. The mitzva (commandment or good deed) is expected from those who can do it and the one for whom it is done cannot thank us. I am a little tired this morning but glad to have done my duty and, once again, forever changed.

Don’t you wish you could be a Palestinian refugee too?

What a gig. You produce nothing. You get lots of sympathy and lots of cash from the Israel-haters of the world. Meanwhile, it’s off to the beach. Just try to watch out for your Hamas rulers, eh? They have no sense of humor.

Texas to Barry: Drop Dead

Our little Barry Hussein wants Texas to relax its economic sanctions against Iran in light of his duplicitous nuclear “deal” in which Iran gets everything and the US nothing.

“In his response to the President, Governor Abbott wrote: ‘Because the Iran deal is fundamentally flawed and does not permanently dismantle Iran’s nuclear capability, Texas will maintain its sanctions against Iran.

“’Further, because your administration has recklessly and unilaterally removed critical sanctions, I have called on the Texas Legislature to strengthen the Iran sanctions that Texas already has in place.'”
