Kitchen almost done

A few mistakes but mostly very good cabinets repainted Bright White and likewise the ceiling with new, very light-blue Tame Teal (SW5767) walls.

Crown and window molding to go and painting of new six-panel pantry door. Monday, early, they said and, indeed, they were early Friday and Saturday. We’re putting our stuff back slowly, gratefully, evicting what we don’t need.

UPDATE: Two drawers no longer fit and the pantry door is cheap hollow-core, so door will have to be replaced and drawers fixed before molding can go up.

Painters reprise

Promised the neurotic, we’re back to the replacement, who rolled in at 10 a.m. for a wonder and claims he’ll be done by 5. No explanation from the contractor yet.

UPDATE:  At 4 p.m they still haven’t begun to spray paint, though it seems to be coming. Over by 5:30, they’re now saying. Contractor obviously sent them but he’s not admitting it. Really hard working with people who speak no or little English. They had done good work before so we kept hiring them.

The remodel next door…

…has been very loud, considering they were ripping up the carpet for hard wood and remodeling the kitchen. Turned out to be also cutting the tile off the fireplace surround and bashing in some drywall to…? Electric drills and sanders sound like they’re, well, next door. Thin walls we have. I keep waiting for one to come through our wall. While my promised painters still aren’t here.

Kitchen painting?

Supposedly, it goes down today. I’ll believe it when it happens. It’s been ten days, with a neurotic carpenter and a young, not very responsible replacement.

UPDATE: Seen hide nor hair of our replacement by 3:00. Told contratctor I want a replacement for the replacement. He’s for bringing back the neurotic tomorrow. Sigh.

Finally, the painters

It’ll be about three hours, said the leader of the kitchen-painting crew. A two-man operation for a smallish kitchen. Big for the mini-rancho but small most everywhere else. Oh joy! We can finally move our cabinet stuff off the floor and back in place. When it dries. But it’s spray, so it’ll dry quick.

UPDATE:  Then the leader disappeared, leaving the helper to struggle on with covering stuff not to be spray painted with paper, and the contractor was incommunicado. Upshot, a day later, the kitchen still isn’t painted.

Kitchen saga continues

Rebuilding the cabinets is taking time. New ones would have been easier and maybe less expensive but we liked the configuration of the old ones, 35 plus years old, so we opted to replace the old, cheap composite shelves for new plywood. Then to repaint bright white, inside and out, which isn’t fashionable anymore but we like it.

The neurotic carpenter

Our carpenter bailed on our kitchen remodel at the mini-rancho at Neely’s Canyon about a third of the way through. Our contractor brought in another one and a plumber to install the new porcelain-on-cast-iron sink, which he did last night, so that’s working again. New carpenter comes today to complete rebuilding the cabinets.

The original carpenter told the contractor he was “bored” working a rebuild instead of an original. It could be a neurosis, according to the contractor, since the guy’s behind on two other rebuilds as well. But it may be it’s the kitchen’s curse on craftsmen. That’s because we already lost a previous carpenter, a little guy we called the leprechaun, who measured and promised and then bailed before even starting. Could be this second guy was infected, too.
