Devalued prize

Face it, we knew the Nobel Peace Prize was worthless when lifetime terrorist Yasser Arafat got it for pretending to call off his bully boys. It was further demonstrated when clueless, anti-Semitic Jimmah Carter got one for marching to Europe’s anti-American drum. Now that Al "Big Electric Bill" Gore has one, yawn, for a lying propaganda film of pure political correctness, we can all go back to sleep.

The moldboard plow

Antique shops and heritage museums everywhere are littered with the old, rusted farm implements of our onetime agrarian society, and Texas is no different. Now and then you can even find a mouldboard plow, "the plow that broke the plains." The first American example apparently was the work of Thomas Jefferson, based on what he’d seen in Europe. This early, great technical advance, later improved by American John Deere, is still in use. Although no longer, of course, pushed behind a mule.

The 2007 Physics Nobel for…

Wait for it. The Mp3 player! Well, not exactly, but the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is boasting that without the awarded physics process, called magnetoresistance (magnet plus neato), you could kiss magnetic hard drives, including the MP3 and the Ipod, adios amigo. I like my IRiver Mp3 player, which is a heck of a lot cheaper than an Ipod, just fine. But, really. I can well understand Snoopy the Goon’s pique.

In fourteen hundred and ninety-two…

…Columbus sailed the ocean blue. So today is Columbus Day, and that’s about the end of the good press for the Great Navigator. Soon, his sponsors, the Spaniards, came and conquered most of the indigs and enslaved them and stole their gold and silver. Nowadays, to hear the Mexican multiculties, you’d think it was the English. But it was, in fact, their ancient archenemies, the Spanish, some of whose half-Indian descendents today feel justified in acting so superior to English-speaking people. How’s that for irony? Jews, of course, remember 1492 for another reason: the year of their expulsion from Spain unless they converted to Roman Catholicism. History, which looks so benign in the rhymes Mr. B. is learning in second grade, is a bitter cup.

MORE: On the other hand, on this most unPC of holidays, it helps for even the America haters to remember that it wasn’t all bad. Chris brought civilization, and, via Cortez, an end to human sacrifices in Mexico and elsewhere.

Stonings

On the CBS drama "Cold Case", it’s Christians who do it to fornicating women. So very bold of CBS television to attribute the barbaric murder to a Christian sect, don’t you know. In Iran, it’s actually being done by the the Islamic state, where Columbia U.’s invited speaker, Mahmoud the Mad, is president. Not sure what happened to the man on CBS’s "show." In the Iran case, the fellow "got off" with "only" a hundred lashes.

Fred, oh Fred

I wouldn’t expect the MSM to report supportively on Fred Thompson, the way they do for their favored Democrats, like Hillarity, everyone’s wicked stepmother. I recall that Reagan’s early campaign was met mainly with skepticism. Most of the news media is not conservative, after all, and considers Republicans to be the folks you call when you want "the other side." But Fred is so low-key so far, it’s almost as if he isn’t there. Rudy seems far abler.

Inconvenient review

It didn’t stop Al "Big Electric Bill" Gore from winning an Oscar and an Emmy, but his global warming flick is too heavy-handed for British schoolchildren without a pre-showing declaration of its bias, according to a British judge. Probably won’t stop his reportedly impending Nobel Prize, either. After all, if the Peanut President could get one, well….

UPDATE: Shocking. A CNN meteorologist agrees with the judge.
