Evolution in action

Don’t worry, it’s not loaded.

The story behind the real estate bubble

I haven’t read this book yet (though I have read this one by the same author), but I liked the neat summary below by one reviewer which encapsulates details I have seen elsewhere piecemeal:

“This is a very thorough book that carefully documents the major developments that led up to the financial melt-down of late 2007 including the CRA [Community Reinvestment Act], the governmental pressure to make home loans to lower-income citizens who could only marginally afford them, the resultant buy-back by the federal government of most of those loans so that banks were relieved of risk in making them, the not-surprising greed of the mortgage industry in promoting these loans, the virtual take-over of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by community activists, the establishment of an implied federal backing of this risk, and the resultant bubble that has burdened the tax-payers with more debt in less time than ever in our history.”

This cynical bit of social engineering by politicians who know nothing of economics and could care less—though they always blame capitalism for the shite they stir up—was before Obamaloot came along and added billions in crony handouts. You know, the so-called “stimulus” which has worked out so well.

Braveheart

No, I’ve never seen the movie and have no desire to. Not only because of the anti-Semitic Mel Gibson who stars in it, but because I generally avoid Hollyweird’s movies. Even when they aren’t anti-American, they are pathetic.

But the Braveheart Theme music, by composer John Horner, is something else. I’ve really enjoyed playing the solo violin part, in the arrangement by young Taylor Davis.

Her expert rendition of it here includes a lot of third position shifting, which gives the high notes a warmer tone. I’m only starting to learn shifting. So I play it only in first position, which is a bit thinner. And I don’t know vibrato yet. Nor am I, after only six months, anywhere near as good at it as she is.

Reminds me, I need to do a Rule 5 on Ms. Davis. I’m sure you can see why.

Letter to the Presbyterians

We ask you to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in rejecting the counterproductive proposal to selectively divest from certain companies whose products are used by Israel. We feel honored in our hope by the Methodist General Assembly which, after much forethought and debate, decided to oppose such divestment by a 2-1 margin.”

UPDATE:  The Presbies voted down the proposal, but by a much thinner margin than the Meths did. I still say these organizations should lose their tax exemptions, since they’re obviously not just religious groups, but political ones as well.

My very own Amazon Troll

I suppose other people who review books on Amazon wind up being stalked by people who disagree with them. But this guy’s penchant for showing up just about every time I review a book, and leaving comments critical of me is new in my cosmology.

He seems to take the most offense at my criticisms of the liberal mainstream media. Political correctness, a phrase he finds offensive. And/or Obumbles. He’s either a media drone himself (in which case I pity him, truly) or, at least, an Obozo supporter (which only elicits my contempt). Or else he has nothing better to do than harass other people.

At Amazon I am following the oldest Net rule: don’t feed the troll. But here and now is different. I own this venue. Come around here and play, little troll, if you dare.

Around here we follow Moe Lane’s advice on troll hunting. Fair warning.

Rule 5: Erin Andrews

In case you ever wondered (duh) how to get a job as a girl sports reporter on television. There are at least two obvious qualifications you must have. Hint: A journalism degree is not one of them.
