The Baby Bust

The WSJ’s Best of The Web argues for more legal immigration based on an historically-low birth rate for American women:

“American women are having children at the lowest rate on record, with the number of babies born in the U.S. last year dropping to a 30-year low, federal figures [show]…

“The general fertility rate for women age 15 to 44 was 60.2 births per 1,000 women—the lowest rate since the government began tracking it more than a century ago…”

With European women likewise giving birth at historically low rates, the West’s declining (and simultaneously aging) population should be grounds for statistical worries, yes, but more immigration? When unemployment among blacks and legal Hispanics is at an all-time low? Maybe not.

Cinco de Mayo

A Mexican mayonnaise festival.

Me and Barbara Ellen skipped the tacos today in favor of Chinese.

Mexifornia secedes

“California has one quarter or more of America’s illegal aliens – as well as one third of the entire nation’s welfare recipients.  With a population more than 40 percent Latino, it has become Mexifornia.

“The new California motor-voter registration law that took effect April 1 transparently is intended to enfranchise illegals, who vote 2-1 for the ruling Democratic Party, in order to dissolve the American nation into a borderless, bankrupt, bilingual backwater ruled as a colony by a global progressive government.”

So, with this metaphorical first shot at Fort Sumter, this transparent secession, will Trump send in federal troops to take over Sacramento and restore constitutional order?

UPDATE: More than a million illegals have received Mexifornia driver’s licenses.

Let the border wall begin

Hey, but it wasn’t in that omnibus budget the Congress just passed and The Donald signed. No? Guess again.

It was buried under Defense Appropriations. All $1.6 billion of it. What is a border wall if not Defense and National Security? The Dems had to pass the bill to find out what was in it. Now they have.

Shitholes I have known

J.D. hits a homer with this post on Haiti and other shitholes according to Trump. Haiti: “The more they are given the less they have.”

Thanks, in part, to the Clintons.

But face it, people, anywhere but Texas is a shithole.

Border wall protoypes

“President Donald Trump promised to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Prototype construction began last month, with crews given 30 days to complete their models. Watch these latest construction videos from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

They look a lot like the slabs of concrete separating Israel proper from the West Bank—halting wouldbe terrorists and random snipers.

Mexico City Quake

Today’s temblor comes on the anniversary of the 1985 quake of 8.0:

“The 1985 Mexico City earthquake struck in the early morning of 19 September at 07:17:50 (CST) with a moment magnitude of 8.0 and a Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). The event caused serious damage to the Greater Mexico City area and the deaths of at least 5,000 people.”

In a city of 8.8 million, to keep it in perspective. Today’s was only a 7.1, so maybe not so bad.

I spent that day in 1985 with a ham radio operator in Rollingwood, a suburb of Austin, listening to emergency calls and later writing a piece on what was learned. Communications were generally down then. Hard to say what it will be like now, with greater computer capacity and cell towers and wifi and generally a greater Internet. Ham radio should not be so necessary or useful.
