Free Billy Joe

The jury is in at The Fat Guy on country singer ("Georgia On A Fast Train") Billy Joe Shaver’s little dustup in Lorena the other day:

"It’d be hard to find a more peaceful & generous man, and I know he’s supremely appreciative of his fans, too."

But the matter is in dispute. Shaver’s Austin lawyer, Joe Turner, tells the American-Statesman: "He’s already done 20 years in Waco. What more can they do to him? I think he’s suffered enough."

Cowboys on strike

"On this day in 1883, many Texas cowboys went on strike against their bosses, absentee ranchers. The cowboys’ grievances, however, were against developments that proved permanent. As closed-range ranching wiped out the previous open-range industry, some of the cowboys’ traditional perks were denied them. No longer could they brand mavericks, keep small herds of their own, or receive part of their pay in calves."

The strike only lasted 2.5 months, and didn’t change anything.

Adios drought

With more rain moving in to the Austin area tomorrow through Saturday morning, some folks are saying the Central Texas drought which began in October, 2005, is almost over. And the LCRA’s Bob Rose says our outlook is for near-normal rain for spring and at or above normal for the summer. Meanwhile, we’re already 7 inches above average for 2007. Lake Travis, meanwhile, is still rising.

The lump on Dr. Perper’s head

A true, blogospheric success story. Only in Texas.

"All told, some 10,000 to 15,000 new readers from around the world have found The Brazosport News all because of the lump on Dr. Perper’s head."

Writing from the underarm of the petrochemical industry. I kid you not.

Flash floods possible

Tonight’s forecast storms–brought to us by a low pressure system moving in from the west and colliding with an atmosphere laden with moisture from the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico–could be memorable, according to Bob Rose. He was predicting on Friday 2 to 4 inches across the Hill Country, and that was still in other forecasts last night and this morning. The only problem is the ground is still wet from recent rains, so creeks and streams could rise rapidly enough for some flash flooding.

Happy trails

To some Texans the title of this song by Dale Evans has long been a salutation, almost a verbal tic.

"Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin’ until then."

An early-morning visitor’s search engine request for the lyrics reminded me it’s about time I posted them. Although I was a confirmed Gene Autry fan, I had to admit that Roy and Dale were more popular. See their museum with handmade boots and up-to-date mousepads. As for the song, well, what could you expect from someone whose horse was named Buttermilk?

Catkin time

The worst thing about spring in Texas, other than the second raking to get up all the live oak leaves that didn’t fall in the fall, is when the trees tassel. The tassels are really pollinating catkins, long dangles which appear before the new leaves do. Then they turn brown and fall in such numbers that they clog the pool and stain the white concrete deck around it brown, and generally make a huge mess. It seems to be almost over, where it counts, above the pool and the deck. So it’s almost time to get out the power washer and try to restore the pool company brochure look to the area.
