Sky tour

Mr. B. said his favorite part of the Fort Davis trip was touring the big green 107-inch telescope at McDonald Observatory on Tuesday and then the Star Party Wednesday night. We timed the sky tour just right, as Wednesday night was clear, not as chilly as Tuesday, and the wind was light instead of stiff. You might, however, rename a Star Party a line party, as you have to stand in line at the various amateur telescopes, and with hundreds of people there during Spring Break, the lines were long. So we packed it in after three viewings: Messier 35, the Orion Nebula, and Saturn. Got another brownie from the visitor’s center Star Date Cafe to share and then drove back down the mountain.

Day By Day in Iraq

Chris Muir, author of the Day By Day cartoon strip at the right bottom of this blog’s front page, on his recent embed in Iraq, which will be featured in future comics:

"…I went on patrols most every day, with 1-9 Cav, and 2-7 Cav, respectively. The MSM had geared me up to expect RPGs flitting about like ginormous mosquitos, but I gotta tell ya, I couldn’t draw a single shot while I was there. The troops wanted me to hang around, as I had ‘Jesus Fire’ about me, etc."

With pix and worth a read

Baghdad waiting

The surge strategy is set to begin in Baghdad even as a market cleans up after a horrific bombing:

"There was notable deployment of Iraqi army units and armored vehicles on the streets yesterday. I saw one of those armored units establish battle positions at one of the important intersections in Baghdad; soldiers were erecting tents and the vehicles were set in defensive formations. Maybe that intersection will become the border of one of the nine sectors."

Wonderful headline

This headline in the New York Sun pretty much says it all, but if you need the article, it’s here:

New York Times Admonishes Reporter For Hoping America Wins in Iraq

UPDATE  Slate’s Mickey Kaus goes over it

Kerry won’t run again

"We came close – certainly close enough to try again," Mr Kerry told senators, at one point choking back tears. "But I have concluded this isn’t the time to mount a presidential campaign."

Adios Lurch. I know I’m heartbroken. Aren’t you?

Insight on "The Braggart Soldier," Kerry’s dramatic type, by Roger L. Simon:

"…one of the stock figures of ridicule in commedia dell ‘arte."

Petraeus on Iraq

"’The situation in Iraq is dire,’ he told the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is expected to easily approve his nomination for the Iraq command. ‘The stakes are high. There are no easy choices. The way ahead will be very hard. … But hard is not hopeless.’"

The old boss of the 101st Airborne is considered a straight-shooter, and he sounds like it. Let’s hope he can help the Iraqi government and security forces turn things around.

Austin forecast

Accuweather has a new freebie for bloggers, a perky forecaster for your city or region whose act can be plugged into your main index. Check it out at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. The only thing I don’t like about it is the size. It’s a bit too big for my layout. But keeping it down at the bottom is OK.
