Army Strong

Blackfive reminds that the new Army recruiting campaign, with its stirring video, begins tonight at 7 p.m. CST on most television networks. Ironic timing, though, given the new peace-at-any-price makeup of the Congress. Also Blackfive’s nice Rummy memorial/celebration.

UPDATE  Even before the video aired, the Army made its new recruit goals for October, and had no trouble with re-enlistments: "Re-enlistments in October far surpassed the goals for the active army (30 percent), the reserve (14 percent) and the national guard (43 percent)."

Feeling a draft? You shouldn’t.

"Dr. Francis Harvey, Secretary of the Army…notes that recruitment is at a 9-year high and that reenlistment is very strong. Harvey talks about the Army’s strength levels, force structure, equipment maintenance loads, and general ability to withstand the stress of the Long War against terrorism. In particular, he responds rather forcefully to claims that the Army is lowering standards to make its recruitment numbers."

Instapundit’s Glenn and Helen "show." Radio, in essence, when you want it.

The ‘increasingly popular war.’

Army recruiting is up, well up, better than any year since 1997, which some would find a surprise, though I do not. I am surprised that the polls are starting to register an increasing willingness to ride the Iraq campaign out for what it’s worth.

"It will be interesting to watch the news stories now. Remember all those articles with the words ‘increasingly unpopular war’? Will we see reports now with the words ‘increasingly popular war’?"

I wouldn’t bet on it.

R.I.P. PFC William E. Thorne, 4th ID

"The family [of Hospers, Iowa] issued a written statement that described Thorne as ‘very kind, quiet, and unassuming.’

"’He had an affectionate sense of humor, and a most infectious smile. He was an example of both humility and endurance through challenging times,’ the statement read. ‘His gracious presence will continue to be an inspiration. His family is very proud of his dedication and sacrifice, and is committed to honoring him through their lives.’"

UPDATE His wife, Corey, who was also serving in Iraq, illustrates Belmont Club’s belief that religious faith will be needed to beat the jihadis. "We are two very strong people," Corey Thorne said when asked how they coped with the separation and the danger of combat deployment. "We leaned on each other very much. We just trusted in the Lord, that God would take care of each other. Being a solder, I was trained to prepare myself for this."
