Haveil Havalim #241

The Jewish/Israeli blog carnival Vanity of Vanities is up. Never better, I say modestly, as it has two entries of my own.

I Have Lived A Thousand Years

Livia Bitton-Jackson’s 1999 young-adult book is not the first Holocaust memoir I’ve read, but it may be the most memorable. Not an easy read, of course, none of them are. I had to put it down several times and go off and do something else to forestall being consumed by anger and tears.

Especially affecting is the fact that she was only thirteen when her Czechoslovakian family was humiliated by the invading Hungarians, turned over to the SS and shipped to Auschwitz. Only the infamous Dr. Mengele saved her from the gas, telling her at "selection" to lie that she was sixteen, because she was tall for her age and he was struck by her blond hair and blue-green eyes. He’d apparently never seen a Jew who looked Aryan.

All the pertinent details of the experience are revealed, slowly in dramatic fashion. The recreated scenes and dialogue (and telescoped events) are more historical fiction than unadulterated fact. Which is not to question their truth, however. In the end, her story of strength and survival in the face of so much cruelty and heartbreak is inspiring. Some of us really can survive almost anything. Of course, she was left with much to work through: "My friends, my family, all those achingly dear to me, my entire world, rose up in smoke, vanished."

The book’s dedication is especially touching: "…to the children in Israel who, unsung and unacclaimed, risk their lives every day just by traveling to school…the only guarantee that a Holocaust will never happen again."

That, and the fact that they are protected by the IDF.

Universal flu vaccine

This development could be bigger news than the latest killer strain, H1N1 or whatever. Course it has a ways to go yet before anyone outside the trials could take it, and FDA approval might slow it down a while longer. But it’s nice to see Israeli research in the vanguard again.

Those Israeli mind rays

Barry’s preferred president of Honduras, the deposed Manuel Zelaya, needs to be fitted with a tinfoil hat. To stop the mind rays from the "Israeli mercenaries," he tells the Miami Herald, who are trying to assassinate him.

But all is not lost. The dictator’s club is delivering food to his basement room at the Brazilian embassy, when they can spare the time from enjoying Barry’s own denunciation of the Israelis. Birds of a feather, indeed. Now that their Honduras op has been exposed, we’ll just have to wait and see what the Elders of Zion have to say about it. (Hmmm. That was quick.)

UPDATE:  Un, Manuel, President Let Me Be Clear is down on you now. Must be your tinfoil hat.

The best Air Force in the world

Certainly the most tested. I’m not sure why the video is so badly out of focus. Perhaps it was meant to be played smaller.

Vanities

Mr. Boy went off to four weeks of day camp at the JCC this morning. He rebuffed Mrs. Charm’s offer to help him find his group at the flag raising. Being a rising fourth grader he’s too big for nanny stuff. He was looking forward to a hot game of Ga-ga, an Israeli form of dodge ball. With a forecast high of 102, it definitely will be hot.

Meanwhile, I was honored to have two posts linked in the new Haveil Havalim, a carnival of Jewish blog posts founded way back when by Soccer Dad. It is, appropriately, the Hot and Humid Edition. Haveil Havalim means Vanity of Vanities, a reference to King Solomon’s discovery that materialism for its own sake is a dead end. Or something like that.
