Hairnet and giveaway

"As the U.S. House of Representatives [narrowly passed] a climate-change bill, the Australian Parliament is preparing to kill its own country’s carbon-emissions scheme. Why? A growing number of Australian politicians, scientists and citizens once again doubt the science of human-caused global warming."

Well jolly good for them. Finally some common sense. Not that it will have any influence on our political crooks. Now to see whether the Senate has more honesty. I suspect not. Some think the American electorate will not remember who done this deed when their electricity bills double and the economy craters. I think they will, and the Dems will pay big time.

Hairnet and giveaway is the translation of the bill’s cap and trade title by Steve Hayward at No Left Turns who suspects the last-minute bill has so many loopholes for favored (read big contributor) outfits that it will have no measureable effect on "the risks of global warming." But, come on, we can’t change the climate. How smart do you have to be to figure that out?

Obama rules the young?

So say the pundit/profs at No Left Turns, a conservative site I usually enjoy for its measured take on just about everything. But this belief that the young will propel Baby Barry into the presidency makes me laugh. The great thing about the young, I have found, in terms of not wanting to be governed by their often-silly politics, is that for all their big talk, they seldom register to vote. When they do, they just can’t find the time to go to the polls. They figure someone else will do it. Yep. I will, but I won’t vote for BB.

The Christian Hallows

The Christian motifs of Book 7 in the Harry Potter series are pretty obvious, from Harry’s willing sacrifice of himself to save the world, and his afterlife way-station conversation with the spirit of Dumbledore (Just because it’s only in your head, Harry, doesn’t mean it isn’t real), notwithstanding his decision to return to life to defeat the evil Tom Riddle. Other interesting thoughts on these scenes are here, thanks to No Left Turns, and here at the Sword of Gryffindor and also LaShawn Barber. I was surprised by the intensity of the ideas in Book 7, but had to admit that much of the Potter books have, all along, mirrored Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, whose authors were serious Christians. I am not a Christian at all, but nevertheless find all three series inspiring in our, often oppressively, secular age.

Happy Birthday, Sir Winston

"You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival."

Churchill’s first speech upon becoming prime minister, May 13, 1940. Today, he would have been 132.
