Longhorns football

Everything is looking good this season for Texas, with AP ranking the guys No. 2 in its pre-season poll. The bookies also are in line. Now. All, that is, except their wimpy non-conference schedule. Too many creampuffs, which could come back to haunt them when strength-of-schedule considerations come into play. The "toughest" apparently will be, wait for it, Wyoming. Geez Louise.

Horns on a roll

Big wins in the first four pre-conference games look really good. But Colorado’s next, and Oklahoma thereafter. If Colorado falls, then the Longhorns certainly will have a chance to beat the Sooners. But only if that happens, will these first four victories be vindicated. Then, of course, it’ll be on to another questionable result with Missouri. Colt’s looking great. But he has to stay that way.

Vince, we hardly knew ye

Vince Young, injured and depressed at being booed when he throws an interception, seems to be a different fellow than the one who won a national title for the Longhorns in 2005–after throwing more than a few interceptions.

Now he’s talking of suicide and carrying a gun in the glove compartment of his car. Even with Chris Sims (Chris Sims!) to mentor him now he seems to be having second thoughts about the NFL, possibly because of all the pressure: the hits, the fans, the coaches, all the relatives with their hands in his pockets. Hey, Vince, you can always come back to Austin and sell cars.

Horns a question mark

Oklahoma seems to be the favorite of the betting line, both to win the Big Twelve South this year and, less so, the Big Twelve itself. The Longhorns may not even be up in the pre-season Top Ten–which will be released soon The daily’s Kirk Bohl’s says what the Horns do this year depends on whether Coach Mack Brown keeps the growl he acquired before last season’s Holiday Bowl win. We might be able to bet on Burnt Orange Nation coming up with an optimistic prediction when they get around to it.

Super Bowl champ

Good for you, cornerback Aaron Ross, former Texas Longhorn on the 2005 National Championship team’s win in the Rose Bowl, now a Super Bowl champ in his first, rookie season in the National Football League. You started most of the season, even played with a dislocated shoulder against the Cowboys, and were a first-teamer against the Patriots last night. Congratulations.

Longhorn to the Super Bowl

Not his most glorious AP photo, but it’s nice to see former Longhorn Aaron Ross, of San Antonio, (No. 31) the Giants’ rookie cornerback, get a trip to the Super Bowl in his first year in the pros. Hook Em, Aaron!

Holiday Bowl

Watching the game on ESPN360.com is disconcerting. It’s about seven minutes behind the game on the Longhorn Sports Radio Network, and the Web game audio is hard to understand because it keeps cutting in and out. But the halftime score, 28 to 10, Longhorns, is easily understandable. Texas is threatening to walk away with it. If Arizona State keeps up the turnovers and Texas keeps on sacking their QB, this is going to be a rout.

UPDATE:  It pretty much was, Texas winning 52 to 34. Only wish they’d played like that all season–which they ended 10-3. Losses to Oklahoma and A&M in the same season really stung.
