I still love my Kindle 2

But like Scott at the Fat Guy, I probably will get a Kindle Paperwhite when the 2 finally bites the dust. Richard Fernandez, as usual with him, has a nice little essay on why he loves his Paperwhite, with only this little proviso:

“The biggest benefit of the readers, I’ve found, is that you can shift between volumes. When the classics get too heavy you can always switch to something more tradesman-like. But perhaps that is properly considered, a disadvantage. The one thing the old timers had on us is they had so little in the way of portable information they were forced to discover drama in nature or find it in their own thoughts. They preferred poetry because verse is compressed; full of suggestion, not exposition.”

I would only add that I have bought more books with the 2 than I ever did in paper. I love the ease of buying, even from on my back in bed, and the dictionary for checking the meanings of words. The Kindle is even searchable! Zounds.

Rule 5: Pin Up Girls

Glad to see these “girly” calendars are still around. I saw my first one when I was about fifteen and wandered into my Texas grandfather’s engineering office. It was at the Magnolia Petroleum Company‘s terminal (now Mobil Illinois Pipeline Company) just north of tiny Patoka, IL. Instant you-know-what.

Via The Fat Guy through whom you should buy your own copy if you’re so inclined. The purchase link is there. I’d like to but I have no idea where I could put it without incurring Mrs. Charm’s enduring wrath.

This is my idea of a firearm

Scott’s good cancer news

Valentine’s was an especially nice day for my old blog buddy and Web master Scott Chaffin of San Antonio:

“The docs say that the chemo has achieved it’s goal and stabilized the tumor, so it’s shrunk “a considerable amount” and isn’t growing any more. There’s been no spread of cancer (or metastasis) to other parts of my beat-to-hell body.

“And a rib, what was broken about a year ago, and was a spot of concern — the lesion there has shrunk, which could be normal healing or the chemo killing cancer…don’t know, can’t know really. So, I am getting a 90 day stay from more treatment, [while] hopefully, I can start regaining strength and some capacity for doing something besides sitting on my tukus.”

Meanwhile, he’s looking forward to seeing whether the Rangers’ new $107.7 million Japanese pitcher, Yu Darvish, will be able to help get them back in the World Series—where third time just may be the charm for the boys from Arlington. Unless Darvish sucks, as most transitioning Japanese players have.

Radiation burns, chemo poisons

And both play hell with your taste buds, your throat tissues, and your digestive system.

It’s not a pretty subject—modern cancer “therapy”—but Scott at the Fat Guy is being a blog trouper about bringing us all the gory details of his radiation-and-chemotherapy-driven dietary struggle.

It’s news you probably will be able to use someday. Like it or not.

Good ol’ Rangers

They won their second pennant last night, bats aflame in a 15-5 beatdown of El Tigres de Detroit, and advance to their second World Series in a row—a first in the American League West since the Oakland As did it in 1988-90, according to Fox Sports.

Hope they can win this one, whomever they play, St. Louis or Milwaukee, and not be plowed under again as San Francisco did to them last year. I’m sure their No. 1 fan, my very own Webmaster who is undergoing chemo at the moment, is optimistic. But he usually is where the Rangers are concerned.

UPDATE:  The Cardinals are their opponent, starting Wednesday. Go TR!

Help a friend

My San Antonio friend and Texas Scribbler Web master Scott Chaffin has been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer.

Self-employed as he is, Scott’s in need of some help for treatment costs. Instapundit’s notice yesterday already is helping. Note tip jar upper right sidebar here. I gave something. You should, too.
