Sports rage

I used to not read the sports pages except during college football season. Then Mr. Boy started following the Texas Rangers and spouting baseball statistics and standings, and that got me interested. So I go to read the section this morning and discover that he took it to day camp with him. Grrrr.

108 degrees

Not here, no. In Sacramento, on Wednesday, where we left last Saturday after a week of what everyone there said was an unusual period of very pleasant temperatures, despite their lengthening drought and smoke from wildfires to the north.

Still, it’s hot enough here, though not quite as bad as when we left to go out there–a few degrees lower on the daily highs. But Jim Spencer’s forecast at KXAN is for the highs to get back to ninety-nine by the weekend with more to come. The triple-digit days are going to come back. This is the time of year when they normally start. This year they just started early, in late May. Maybe they’ll be too exhausted to return. Hope, hope.

Top Ten War Movies

My list, mainly compiled from the choices at the post here and also the ones from the commenters there (they didn’t mention Twelve O’Clock High or Ran, but they’re my favorites):

10. The Lighthorsemen

9. Glory

8. Twelve O’Clock High

7. The Great Escape

6. Run Silent, Run Deep

5. Fort Apache

4. Bridge Over The River Kwai

3. Zulu

2. Ran

1. Das Boot

Wi-Fi

Got ourselves a wireless router and plugged it in and so Mom was wandering the Web, in between some last-minute office work, in the kitchen last night. Only problem now is to arbitrate Mr. B.’s desire to use his Nintendo DS gameplayer’s Wi-Fi ability. Have to see how that works and where it will take him before turning him loose with it.

Global warming, early version

One of these years, probably long after I am dead and gone, the MSM is going to do its homework, which should eliminate stories like this. But, really guys, all you have to do is learn to use Google. I hope Varifrank doesn’t sue me for stealing his picture, but who could resist?

Rangers continue to impress

Well, they’ve definitely split the four-game series with the Angels now. One more win and these Rangers could move within 5.5 games of the Los Angeles leader. This is getting to be fun–even with all their pitchers on the DL and Bradley benched with a sore knee, it looks like, for a change, Mr. B.’s team will still be contenders after the All-Star break.

UPDATE:  Well, they almost did it, losing 11-10 in the fourth game of the series. Still got a future.

Blaming the speculators

Why, of course the Congressrats will try to tighten the securities markets as a punishment for four to five dollar gas. As Little Miss Attilla puts it, "What are they going to do–look in the mirror?" Not bloody likely. They won’t authorize any new drilling, either. No wonder their popularity rating (a mere nine percent) is lower than President Bush’s. And that’s with the Dems in charge, to whom the news media, meanwhile, wants you to hand the presidency. Oh, joy.
