Turkey days

I can’t proclaim any great affection for Turkey, despite living in its capital city for one year followed by the next summer, 1961-62, and 1963, but it was an unusual experience. Learning, for instance, about Islamic intolerance for other religions, particularly Christianity. Nevertheless, this site set up by military personnel who have called the country home is intriguing–some when I did, others later. But it mostly speaks to the past, when Turkey was our solid ally, rather than the present when, despite years of military largesse, permission to send an American infantry division into northern Iraq in 2003 was denied.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition

Barry sure is drawing those big, whooping and hollering Democrat crowds. How many votes he will get out of the whole, much-less-Democrat electorate is a lot less certain. One thing that’s for sure is how little Barry–being from Hawaii and Indonesia–knows about the country of which he hopes to be president. It’s a major reason why I don’t think he will be.

Empty holsters

These students have had it paying for and attending classes in a free-fire zone. But I doubt the Dems would agree.

The new Beetle?

Not as pretty as the old Beetle. I owned two of them. But the new one’s promise of eighty mpg is a head-turner in itself. Now some will say that old or new the Beetle is unsafe at any speed because of the mess a full-sized car (let alone a full-sized SUV) hitting it would make of it. But I recall a couple in a Volvo who got creamed by a Beetle in the 1970s. The Beetle driver walked away. My friends spent three days in the hospital.

Superstitious McCain

The Seablogger comments:

"This is supposed to be news, and possibly even a disqualifier for the Presidency. Superior beings like Democrats lack any superstition, though they do believe the government can ‘create jobs.’"

Heh. He says superstition might be forgiven for those who have landed jets on carriers at sea at night.

Return of the lapel flag

Barry, running well behind Hilarity in the polling for the upcoming Pennsylvania primary, has taken (among others) the advice of VDH, and now is again wearing the American flag lapel pin he doffed last fall as too phony. Actually, VDH suggested Barry smother his campaign stage in American flags, as the only reliable antidote to his racist pastor and mentor, the Rev. Goddamn America. But that was before Barry decided to dis rural Pennsylvanians as "clinging" to God, guns and anti-immigrant attitudes, in what George Will calls an echo of that two-time Dem loser (and fellow Illinoisian) Adlai Stevenson.

Our tax burden

For the feds it was 12.72 percent. For state and local, via real estate and estimated sales taxes, it was almost 10 percent. That’s roughly what some others pay in state income taxes, which pols here like to crow that we don’t have. But they do find ways to make up for it. Sadly, we will not be getting a federal refund this year. But all-in-all, I think we’re getting off light.
