Making a game of it (and winning!)

Texas, looking very much like its old self on defense and improving on offense, leads the Children of the Corn 17-3 at the half. We have a rushing QB in Garrett Gilbert, which is good because his down-field passing is ineffective so far.

And we’ve lost one running back and two outstanding defenders to injuries. If the Horns defense can keep containing Cornhead QB Martinez, they just might win this thing. Won’t that blow the bookies’ minds?

UPDATE:  Sweet, sweet victory! Texas 20-13.

MORE:  From the daily: “…said Nebraska fan Steve Kneip of Omaha … as the final seconds ticked off the clock. ‘I thought we had a chance to beat this team. … They always seem to do this to us.'”

Heh.

History has its (brutal) say

The headline in the daily’s sports section was Rangers: Doubts Are History. Story being that these Rangers were too talented and confident to worry about their team’s history of losing to the Yankees in their first post-season game against them.

Alas, history once again had its brutal say as the Wankies won 6-5 tonight in Arlington. Mr. B. and everyone else are deflated at the rancho tonight—especially as the Longhorns are expected to also lose to Nebraska tomorrow afternoon.*

UPDATE:  Then, on Saturday, the Rangers beat the Wankies 7-2, one-upping history, afterall, since it was the first time they’d won a post-season game at home. Now it’s on to New York and game three for the best of five.

*Instead, Texas won 20-13.

They done it!

Mr. B. stayed up later than usual so he could watch those stRangers finally survive the first series of the playoffs, beating Tampa Bay 5-1. Now on to the, uh, next round. There’s hope at the rancho, and in Arlington, tonight!

Lost Maples

meyerThis is not Lost Maples State Park. It’s Gastehaus Meyer in Comfort. But they’re touting the park as the perfect reason to come spend a fall weekend with them (then drive to the park near Vanderpool). Must consult with Mrs. Charm. Sounds nice. If we can make arrangements to park Mr. Boy with a chum for two nights.

Those damn deer

I feel like a curmudgeon chasing children off the lawn when I yell or clap my hands to get four or five white-tailed deer off the front lawn. But, in addition to their poop, which accumulates, they are stupid enough to try to jump through a window as they did here. Our local pols, of course, are worthless. They have long refused to buck the Bambi/Greens crowd and do anything to get the deer out of the neighborhood.

More friends of Daniel Pearl

Today “is the birthday of Daniel Pearl, the Jewish-American reporter-musician who was kidnapped and murdered by Islamist Terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002.

In his memory every October since then has been Daniel Pearl World Music Days sponsored by the Daniel Pearl Foundation, run by Daniel’s parents, Judah and Ruth. This year there are more than 1400 events scheduled in more than 60 countries around the world.”

There were two events in Austin, both unfortunately past. One was Oct. 1 at the Green Mesquite and the other was Oct. 6 at Threadgill’s. You might consider patronizing those restaurants as a thank-you, though I do not recommend the BBQ at Green Mesquite. But they do have other good eats. Anything at Threadgill’s is worth your money.

The only listings in Texas on today’s anniversary of Daniel’s birth seem to be in Denton, northwest of Dallas, where the University of North Texas College of Music is dedicating all of its musical events for the month to him. Elsewhere, go to http://www.danielpearlmusicdays.org/events.php and search for yourself.
