Leaving the gate open

Five years after 9/11, it’s comforting that nothing like that has happened again. But, as the Fort Dix case shows, engaging the enemy in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere probably won’t do the trick forever:

"…this is still one of the easiest countries in the world in which to establish a functioning but fraudulent identity."

Closing the borders would help. Too bad not enough politicians are willing to do it.

We are all Spaniards now…

Steyn’s take is ominous, as PajamasMedia says, if you take him seriously, and I usually do, on what some Dems are already calling for: withdrawal from Iraq.

“[W]e are all Spaniards now…’these Colors Don’t Run’ is a fine T-shirt slogan, but in reality these colors have spent 40 years running from the jungles of Southeast Asia, the helicopters in the Persian desert, the streets of Mogadishu. … To add the sands of Mesopotamia to the list will be an act of weakness from which America will never recover.”

Well, I’m inclined to think we can recover from anything, even nuclear explosions, though I’d prefer to skip the hardship which will make a recovery necessary. Bring them home. Kiss Iraq goodbye. How long before we have to fight again, somewhere else? They will not leave us alone, you fools.

Alan Sullivan, the Seablogger at Fresh Bilge has a different take on Steyn that I like, this part, anyway.

"Why should the US ‘stay’ in the sands of any nation? Our power is mobility. The US is a force for change, not an imperial ruler."

Copperheads win

Get out your American history book to figure out the headline. Let’s just say, in 19th century Southern American vernacular, the war on terrorism could be about to go up the spout. Appeasement of dictators, group hugs and singing kumbaya with the French and the EU could soon be the order of the day.

"Okay, the House has flipped. How about the Senate? We seem to be moving into darker territory with every quarter-hour."

And impeachment–don’t let’s forget impeachment. The Democrats sure won’t. The American people seem either to want Bush’s head on a pike, or a standoff between him and Congress. It looks like they’ll be getting one or the other before next summer. Then, while the cat’s preoccupied with all those congressional hearings and subpoenas, the Jihadis can play.

Hysterical? Unwarranted gloom? Maybe. Bruce Bartlett at RealClearPolitics thinks so.

"Indeed, I think that Democratic control of Congress has the potential to rejuvenate Bush’s presidency, just as Republican control gave new life to Clinton’s."

We’ll know in a few months, when the investigations show trials begin.

UPDATE  On the other hand there’s Ralph Peters best-case prediction of what the party of Michael Moore will do. I think he’s way too optimistic. I also don’t see the point of sending more troops, which is not the way to fight an insurgency. But he’s right about the Iraqis having to get off their butts and eliminate Mookie and his thugs.
