Speaking of bullets and refused arms… Also just plain honesty, a notable Wormtongue deficiency.
I like Andy’s proposed replacement for the tiresome “Have a nice day.” It’s “Shoot straight.”

Andy at MyOldRv works in the South Texas sun, so he needs a big hat to keep his nose, ears and neck from getting blistered. Doesn’t look pretentious on him. Not like the guys you see hereabouts playing Cowboys without the Indians.
“I prefer a Resistol 8 or 10X shantung panama hat from the George Strait collection in 7 3/8 long oval size. Sounds muy complicated but it really ain’t. Once you settle up on the right size, you just gotta get up off that pocket book and decide how many X’s of quality suit you. That is why I tell ya to buy a feed store hat for starters. Most of ‘em are going to be less than $30 bucks and you get to test drive it right on your head.”
He prefers to buy used straws now, off Ebay, if you can imagine it. His wife says they probably sell them mostly to Yankees who use them for decor.
Last straw I bought was back in the ’80s when I traveled around Texas a lot. I went out to the garage, where it now hangs, decor-like, to see what it was. A 7 5/8 long-oval Bangora, made in Conroe, sold at Allen’s Boots on South Congress.
Allen’s is way too expensive now, catering as it does to the tourists. I moved to ball caps long ago anyhow. But if I did spend a lot of time in the Texas sun I’d be buying feed-store straws for sure. Maybe even used ones off Ebay!

“I can hear them slinging pipe on the Flex 5 up the way and when I poke my head out the door, no less than a dozen flare stacks are runnin’ hot out across the pucker brush.”
An oil patch update from gate-guard Andy at My Old RV down well south of the rancho, and that’s without his new solo hearing aid:
“A rattling diesel sounds like they got a clothes dryer with 5 gallon of rock in it running overspeed on the passenger seat next to ‘em. Walking on the caliche rocks sounds like I got feet like a brontosaurus. The generator sounds like a 747 spooling up for take off. It is distinctly unpleasant and near painful.”
Yep. Wait’ll you try the two of ’em at once. You’ll be turning down the volume like I do.

College Station Andy of MyOldRv and his lady love Miss Kathy of San Marcos have been through some hard times lately, including a South Texas hail storm that did in their OldRV and their paid-for (naturally) Suburban.
It put them to seeking (and thankfully finding) temporary substitutes, as they save for permanent while still making a livin’ gate-guardin’ in the shale oil patch. As always, Andy’s posts are worth reading and you might even click through their Amazon link when you want to buy something anyway to help them out a little. As payment for a good read.

MyOldRV is on the job, thanks to the mini-boom in shale oil these days due to $100 a barrel pricing. It pays good but it can be a lonely life:
“One of the impediments to commerce in Texas has always been the distances involved and the remote aspect of some areas of the state…Oil field gate guarding is a recent addition to the oil fields of Texas. I can find little reference to it prior to 2006…[T]his job is not for everybody. Just so happens it fits me and Miss Kathy like a worn pair of Lucchese Ropers.”
Worth a look. Enjoy.
