Vince, and the roll continues…

Does it ever. Tennesee Titans over Buffalo Bills 30-29 in a wild, seesaw shootout. Former Texas QB Vince Young threw two touchdowns and ran 39 yards for another one–enough to raise his rushing yardage for the season to set an NFL record for a rookie QB. Tennessee had some great plays called back for penalties. Too many face masks and personal fouls. Without them, they might have won comfortably, instead of by just one point. But I’m sure they’ll take it.

Vince, the roll continues

Jacksonville 17, Tennessee 24. All the stats here. Story as soon as there is one.

UPDATE  Story here. It wasn’t Vince’s game, until the very end, but considering the worst defense in the league spent most of the game on the field, and won the game forcing turnovers, you have to believe Vince’s charisma had something to do with it. Oh, yeah.

Vince

The Longhorns sure missed him this year–and the Houston Texans–but he’s got bigger fish to fry.

"He doesn’t believe he’s going to lose. He’s comfortable with the game on his shoulders, at his best when the stakes are the highest."

Rice gets a bowl

Nice to see Rice University going to a bowl game this year, for the first time since 1961–the New Orleans Bowl on Friday night, Dec. 22. Especially after their disastrous 1-10 season last year. Though they are often no more than a doormat to the Longhorns in the regular season, the Owls nevertheless are a pretty fair team, usually, and one suspects their 7-5 season this year has a lot to do with their new offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, still the favorite quarterback of many Longhorns fans (including me), or at least a close second to Vince.

The Game

I don’t know much about Northern Illinois (can’t say I ever heard of them, in fact) which Ohio State  handily beat 35-12 on Saturday. But North Texas was a doormat for Texas, rolling over for 56-7, so it wasn’t much more than a scrimmage for the post-Vince National Champs. But we learned we do have an offense, as long as new QB Colt McCoy stays healthy–possibly (probably) definitely minus our starting cornerback Tarell Brown. A commenter at the link there says the Longhorns are becoming known as the Bong Horns. Still, if the O line can keep OSU off the Kid from Tuscola, the outcome still looks promising. Four more days and about 19 hours until Saturday’s 7 p.m. kickoff.

UPDATE  Mr. Brown was supposed to shadow OSU’s Ted Ginn Jr., so he will be missed, even if Colt, who is a redshirt freshman, after all, grows a few years as the evening goes on. Maybe somebody else can catch Mr. Ginn.

Enough about terrorism, let’s talk football

That Texas favorite, former Longhorns QB Vince Young, reportedly is set to quarterback the second and third quarters of tonight’s preseason opener Titans vs Saints game in Nashville. Mr. Boy and Mom are visiting friends in Houston for the weekend, but I know he’ll interested to hear how well his hero did on his first outing since the Rose Bowl. I can’t find any tv listing, but I guess espn.com will be the place to keep up with it.

UPDATE  Titans Radio in Nashville scores it a Saints win 19 to 16 and makes Vince’s turn sound less than impressive and even worrisome:

"Rookie quarterback Vince Young made his NFL debut midway through the second quarter and received a loud reception from the fans at LP Field. Young played throughout the entire third quarter and exited during the fourth after spraining his ankle on a scramble in the red zone."

The Austin American-Statesman has a fine picture of our hero and this much more, along with Vince’s poor stats of only 4 for 11 for 56 yards:

"Young was scrambling to his left and was tackled while throwing into the end zone. He remained down on the field, clutching his left ankle. He was subsequently removed from the game.

"The Titans told the NFL Network that Young’s injury is a sprained ankle and the training staff said the team’s prized rookie will be fine."

Ouch. That never happened when he was a Longhorn.
