Houston after Ike

The Texas Rainmaker, who did not evacuate, has a good post on the storm, the aftermath, and the continued deprivations in the old (1830s-40s) capital of Texas. His photographs tell the story of downed trees and signage, blocked roads and long lines at gas stations and groceries better than words. Our evacuated friends from Kingwood, on Houston’s northwest side, are still in Austin, but not staying at the rancho as they have two dogs. A wonder they found a hotel that would take the dogs, but they did.

The Digital Brownshirts

Want to shut down debate about your own history and questionable associates? Then rally your minions to flood the radio or television station that tries it with callers repeating your talking points. Baby Barry not only sees no contradiction between this behavior and the First Amendment, but actively encourages it from his own campaign site. Well, I suppose it beats breaking windows and setting the Reichstag afire. Or does that come later?

Hacking Sarah’s email a federal case now

The "Save Barry" frenzy continues… Glad to see the FBI and Secret Service are hunting for the hackers who invaded Gov. Palin’s official email account, exposing phone numbers and a few personal details of family members. Considering the federal gumshoes are not renown for efficiency–the shrinkingly-credible Associated Press already is stonewalling them–it’s a relief to know the perps were  was dumb enough to brag about their his crime, thereby leaving plenty of clues.

UPDATE: The apparent hacker, the 20-year-old son of a Tennessee Democrat State Rep, seems to have been caught. Of course it would be a Democrat involved. Gerard van der Leun thinks Sarah should score political points by forgiving him, since the culprit will be prosecuted anyway.

UPDATE II:  Now it’s gone murky again, as the state rep denies reports he ever said his son was involved. Then, the murk cleared, as the FBI got a warrant and searched the kid’s residence.

The six-gun tamed the West

Not hardly. It was something a lot bigger, a lot nosier, and still necessary after all these years.

Learning to do

The whining and handwringing over Sarah’s apparent ignorance of the "Bush doctrine," (whatever that is) goes on and on, now even including the usually-conservative Dallas Morning News editorial page and Roger Ebert, the latest entertainment "critic" to turn pol. Rich Lowery has a fine idea: "She is totally new to these issues and has a lot of learning to do." Works for Barry, and he’s not running for veep. Why not for her?

Barry’s $125,000 donation

Chump change, considering the millions he’s raked in while running for president, but this money came from Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae, who seem to have bought off their regulators this way. Not to mention such groups as ACORN. Oops. So far, The One ain’t talking about it, and his Big Media pals aren’t asking.

Evacuating Houston

Mom’s friends who live in Kingwood, on the northeast side of Houston, didn’t choose to evacuate before Hurricane Ike arrived. But, now, they’re thinking about moving to Austin temporarily, if they can find a motel. Many of them already are full with other evacuees. We may wind up taking them for a few days.

Like blogger Melissa Clouthier, a chiropractor who lives in the Woodlands, on the northwest side of the city, they’re tired of the squalor. The power is out, so there’re no lights, no air-conditioning, no water, and no refrigeration. The phones don’t work, and cell phone service is spotty. Their neighborhood grocery is open but they have to use what they buy pretty quickly or it will spoil. Even their employers are without power and therefore shut down. It’s like a return to the 19th century, without the ice deliveries.
