Goodbye Wobblin’ Goblin

I bought one of the early plastic model kits of this radical aircraft, the F-117, just to get an idea of what it was really like. Should have known better. Lots more details and one good close-up picture (see the print copy of the magazine for more) provided in this Air & Space piece, now that the Nighthawk–its official name–is being retired.

The gate keepers’ lament

Columbia University, denying an Iranian report that some professors are enroute to Tehran to apologize to Mahmoud-the-mad for insults on his recent New York visit, includes an interesting little slap:

"We ask that a clarification be added….and that verification of the facts even during the era of Google’s news value-neutral, digital age continues to be warranted."

Ah, yes, let’s bemoan the end of the days when the gatekeepers got to decide "news value." Boo hoo.

No, she’s not from Texas. But here’s a Miss America candidate we can all get behind, a real Utah National Guard medic and Afghanistan veteran. Outlaw 13 at Guidons, Guidons, Guidons! shows how.

Lest we forget

That breath of fresh air

Obama-rama’s free ride is really taking off. So far, nobody is asking how his universal health care program will be any less bankrupting than, say, Medicare. What good it will do to negotiate with terrorists, etc., etc. Dr. Helen sees the questions but can only "hope (they) will be answered prior to the election." Don’t hold your breath.

Maj. Andrew J. Olmsted, R.I.P.

The surge is obviously working. You can tell because Iraq is no longer front page news very often, and most of the pols have stopped yammering about pulling out. But good Americans are still dying there, including this 37-year-old, Big Red One Iraqi army advisor and milblogger from Colorado Springs. Oddly enough, he left behind his own final post and this sayonara:

"I’m dead, but if you’re reading this, you’re not, so take a moment to enjoy that happy fact."

MORE: A friend who served with Olmsted at Fort Carson, CO, remembers him in this touching  tribute. And word is finally trickling out about how AJO died: a sniper got him while he was trying to talk some insurgents into surrendering.

Shuck and Jive

So Huckleberry, the shuck, and Obama, the jive, win in Iowa. Does it matter? I doubt it. Huckleberry does not appeal to most Republicans and Obama, whose anti-war views will appeal to a majority of Democrats, and therefore could get him nominated, ain’t likely to get elected. My two cents, anyway.

UPDATE:  Cobb has a good analysis. He calls it his emotionalism, but it sounds logical to me. Except that he would not vote for Huckleberry if he was the nominee. I can’t believe he will be, but I could never vote Democrat as the party and its leaders are currently constituted. Important, also, to recall that Reagan lost Iowa in 1980, and Dukakis did in 1988. Didn’t stop either one from being nominated.
