Take me back to Tulsa, I’m too young to marry…

Tulsa “eyes” hosting 2020 Summer Olympics. Time to spiff up the ol’ Plymouth again. Now there’s a myopic idea. Personally, I’d rather be 24 Hours From Tulsa. At least.

Big Game Bob fouls out

I’m not among those who think that Oklahoma’s loss to Florida means Texas ought to be No. 1. No, Florida is No. 1, and plainly deserves to be, after figuring out how to get past the Sooners defense. The one the Big Twelve wasn’t supposed to have, eh? That’s the way it is under the current BCS system, which is the only system we’ve got.

Utah done good, but they play in a weak league. USC also performed, at least in its bowl game, if you can call beating Penn State a big deal. The Pac 10, like the Big Ten, sucked during the regular season. And Texas used another one of its trademark come-from-behind, last-two-minutes touchdown drives to get by a really good Ohio State defense. Then smothered OSU’s schizophrenic offense for the win.

Maybe Texas should have played in the title game, instead of Oklahoma, but the Big Twelve’s method of tie-breaking is as old as the conference and sent the Sooners there, instead. Pity Big Game Bob couldn’t pull it off. Again. He really should have left Sam Bradford alone instead of changing the plays before practically every Oklahoma snap. As a result, there was none of the hurryup that had worked so well for the Sooner offense during the regular season. Once again, BGB made the Big Twelve look bad. Ah, well, there’s always next season when, I’ll bet, it’ll be the Big Twelve vs the SEC once again. Get used to it.

UPDATE: AP, dishonest in national politics reporting and so most else, rolls over and plays dead to rank Utah and USC higher than Texas. What a joke. Not that I particularly care, frankly. Bowls are money and Utah provided a more exciting game and beat a team of note. But USC? Same old, same old East and West  coast bias. Bleh.

Tech vs OK

The barbar said the other day that, try as he might, he couldn’t bring himself to root for the Sooners under any circumstances, not even in their game tomorrow night against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech.

An Okie win, the conventional wisdom has it, is the only chance the Longhorns have left to make it into the national championship game–possibly against Florida after the Gators whoop Alabama. But, it seems to me, there’s just as big a chance that a victorious Oklahoma would then vault over Texas in the BCS poll, leaving the Longhorns about where they are now, at No. 3, or even a bit lower. So I don’t know what to do, other than to watch the game and hope for the best by Sunday evening when the poll comes out. My inclination, like the barbar’s, would be to cheer for any Texas team against Oklahoma, but maybe not. We’ll see.

Truck Nuts

Tasteless accessory for your pickemup? Of course. But only north of the Red River would a pol (even a Democrat) try to outlaw bad taste. A contradiction in terms, surely, when we’re talking about Oklahoma. Now if they would get to work on outlawing championship college football within their state lines, that’s a move I could get behind. So to speak.

Mizzou vs Oklahoma

Mr. B. and I are awaiting the big Big 12 championship game tonight which will decide whether Missouri plays for the national championship. We are pulling for Missouri and their Heisman-candidate QB Chase Daniel, who is from the Dallas area. The bookies favor the Okies, who have already beaten Mizzou once this year. Hopefully CD & Co. have figured out how to prevent a repeat of that.

UPDATE:  With eleven minutes to play, it’s OU 35 and Mizzou just 17. Bye, bye Missouri. Daniel keeps making faces. He’s a Texan. He’s seen the Sooner steamroller before. Now he’s under it.

Boomers gettin’ boomed

The Boomer Sooners are gettin’ it handed to them, 21-10 at the half, by the boys from the blue turf. Couldn’t happen to a nicer Big 12 team, if it has to happen to a Big 12 team. I was glad to see Tech win, and just a tad sorry to see Nebraska lose, but Oklahoma? I really don’t mind if I do see them get run over–even by a WAC team.

The Fat Guy has the right attitude:

"I’m kinda happy about having Boise State bust up the Usual Suspects of New Year’s Day. That should be fun to watch – I hope they ruin the Boomer Sooner’s day; not because I don’t like OU, but because I think the Blue Astroturf guys winning creates some chaos and drives water-cooler talk."

True. All true. But it also doesn’t hurt to see the Longhorns’ nemesis get shellaced, either.

UPDATE  The Sooners got WACed, 43-42 in overtime, on a faked pass. Quite a game.
