The lies the news media tells you

Our political erosion might not be so bad if it wasn’t seconded (and sometimes led) by what passes for journalism these days. Forbes calls it the Media Intifada:

“*** The arithmetic of civilian casualties in Gaza is one of the principal media crimes in this war.  It became obvious weeks ago that major Western journalists routinely swallowed the huge civilian-casualty figures dished out to them by Gaza’s Ministry of Health, a bureaucratic arm of a terrorist group that was shown to have lied about such figures in past wars.  In some cases, reporters cite numbers instead from the United Nations, which gets its numbers from—surprise—the Hamas ministry, a dubious source of information, akin to relying on the Reich Health Office for German civilian-casualty statistics during World War II.  On many occasions, major American news outlets haven’t bothered to even attribute the numbers to either the ministry or the UN—simply reporting as fact that ‘most,’ or ‘the majority’ or the ‘vast majority’ of casualties in Gaza are civilians.”

And there’s much, much more. No wonder there are so many anti-Israel protesters and growing anti-Semitism. Relying on American and British newspapers and television they see the wicked Jews bombing Gaza while the pitiful Palestinians fight back with inaccurate rockets and the occasional precision mortar, never even realizing that the Palestinians started it all in the first place, just like they always do.

Thanks New York Times, The Washington Compost, CNN, BBC, and all the lazy little media sheep that follow them around saying ba, ba, ba.

UPDATE: Matti Friedman, a former Associated Press reporter/editor in Jerusalem tells all. The news media gets the story wrong because they intend to get it wrong. It’s their narrative: Israel bad, Palestinians good.

“Many of the people deciding what you will read and see from [Israel] view their role not as explanatory but as political,” Friedman writes. “Coverage is a weapon to be placed at the disposal of the side they like.”

Reminds me of an editor I once worked for who visited Israel not so long ago. He didn’t spend much time in Israel proper. He spent most of it in Ramallah, as a guest of the side he likes.

You can be sure Friedman’s former colleagues and their bosses will deny it all, but as a recovering journalist I can assure you her his analysis of the way the biz works is impeccable: The bigs decide what’s news, reporters follow orders to the letter or are replaced with ones who will. Easy-peasy.

MORE: Meanwhile, in Utah, a white teen is shot to death by a black cop.   Ferguson in different colors. Rioting? MSNBC, CNN, DOJ, Rev. Al converge? NYTimes editorializes? The president speaks? None of that. And you’re not one bit surprised, are you?

Forget the expensive journalism degree. Just follow the diagram. (Works for Tea Partiers and Republicans, too. Whatever the issue; they get the outrage.)

Guilty of war crimes? Consider the UN

Not only did the Dictator’s Club (aka the UN) allow Hamas to store its rockets and other arms in the DC’s so-called schools and medical clinics, but it seems to have supplied the cement used in shoring up the walls of the attack tunnels.

So when the DC (odd how that abbreviation matches another one that seems to prefer Hamas to Israel) calls for investigation of alleged Israeli “war crimes,” it’s obvious whom the probe also needs to include—if not focus on entirely.

UPDATE: The “handmaiden of Hamas.”

Send Gaza to the NYTimes

We’ll see how they like their terrorists up close and personal, eh?

The only thing that would be better would be to send them up the Potomac to the White House where Barry could personally hand them his foreign aid check and weep over the casualties they brought on themselves.

Then he can come pay his respects to the IDF dead and wounded who didn’t.

Those murdered Israeli teenagers

Sad to hear of the murders of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers, but not terribly surprised. Nor of the Drudge headline: “Arabs stone ambulance carrying corpses.” It’s the so-called Religion of Peace at work and play.

As Brett Stephens, former editor of the Jerusalem Post, notes: “As for the Palestinians and their inveterate sympathizers in the West, perhaps they should note that a culture that too often openly celebrates martyrdom and murder is not fit for statehood, and that making excuses for that culture only makes it more unfit.”

Among the “inveterate sympathizers” who should know better, we could start with the Presbyterian Church and their new Israel divestment scheme. And the United Methodists who did it before them. At least we can be pleased that their numbers are steadily dwindling.

Abolish the IRS: Viewpoint discrimination

J Street, the lefty Jewish organization that is more anti- than pro-Israel, has a counterpart in Z Street, which is wholly supportive of the Jewish state. A policy which has drawn the attention of the American Gestapo, known to one and all as the IRS.

“Z Street sued the IRS in 2010, claiming viewpoint discrimination in the processing of its tax-exempt application. It alleged an IRS agent told the group the government applied an ‘Israel Special Policy,’ subjecting groups to greater scrutiny if their views on Israel were at odds with Obama administration views. In court papers, the IRS denies both that Z Street was told that and that such a policy exists.”

It ain’t just Wormtongue’s administration. The federal bureaucracy is largely of Democrat persuasion and the IRS follows suit. So if the largely leftist Democrat party doesn’t agree with your “viewpoint” you could suffer “discrimination” by the one federal agency all Americans fear.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz wants to abolish the IRS. He says its current political discrimination is part of a Democrat party effort to repeal (yes, repeal) the free speech rights of Americans by regulating when they may contribute money:  “If you can prohibit spending money, you can prohibit virtually any form of effective speech.”

Crimea river

Just can’t get excited about Russia’s pending annexation of Crimea. Do wish Lurch wasn’t so free with the billions of our tax money, handing it over to Kiev where the political corruption makes Chicago’s look juvenile. Not to mention the anti-Semitism.

Even Spengler can’t get outraged: “There isn’t going to be a war over Ukraine. There isn’t even going to be a crisis over Ukraine. We will perform our ritual war-dance and excoriate the Evil Emperor, and the result would be the same if we had sung ‘100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall’ on a road trip to Kalamazoo. Worry about something really scary, like Iran.”

Did Lurch get congressional approval for the dispensation, or was that another of Wormtongue’s executive decrees? Who gave him that big of a kitty?

Nor can I get worked up about Wormtongue’s alleged lack of ‘nads on the subject. Bush Jr. didn’t call out the 82nd AD over Georgia in ’08, either. In fact, the ongoing downsizing of the American military is going to make such adventurism harder and harder.

Thankfully, maybe. Unless Monsieur Putin decides to annex Poland, it’s probably for the best. The world policeman gig is old and no longer very appealing to right or left hereabouts.
