We’re converts, here at the rancho, to Skype, the Internet phone service that works with video cameras so you and your interlocutor can see each other as you talk. My cousin Jerry in Dallas, a ham radio operator since the 1930s, got me onto it, and I talked my out-of-state sisters into it. So the four of us have now had conversations and video visits weekends since the middle of January from one end of the country to the other. The camera and a headset (or a microphone) are all you have to pay for. Skype is a free download, and so are the calls, if you have broadband, of course. The video’s a little jerky sometimes, but it’s still more fun than a phone call–and cheaper. Jerry talks to his son in England all the time. Maybe I can interest Snoopy the Goon in it. It would be fun to talk to Israel.
Columbia University, denying an Iranian report that some professors are enroute to Tehran to apologize to Mahmoud-the-mad for insults on his recent New York visit, includes an interesting little slap:
"We ask that a clarification be added….and that verification of the facts even during the era of Google’s news value-neutral, digital age continues to be warranted."
Ah, yes, let’s bemoan the end of the days when the gatekeepers got to decide "news value." Boo hoo.

Readers over at Simply Jews are debating what Isaelis should do about the continued rocket bombardment from Gaza. The usual and, I think, easy, high-mindedness is in evidence–Jews don’t stoop to the level of the enemy–as well as realism that nothing will change until the cooperating Gazan civilians, young and old, pay a price along with the masked gunmen of Hamas. I side with the realists, just as did the so-called Greatest Generation–at Hamburg, Dresden, Yokohama, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as Bret Stephens relates. High-mindedness is good, but the cost of keeping your conscience clear will be the certain deaths and cripplings of young soldiers who would no more lob rockets at a daycare center than strap on a bomb belt and detonate themselves in a crowded supermarket. Ethics in warfare have to be situational, as Stephens also seems to be saying, and the deciding factor must be the probable results. In Gaza, that would be an end to the rockets and, quite possibly, something approaching the German and Japanese surrender.

Israel Massacres Lebanese by Poisonous Balloons
TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Genocide by poisonous balloons is the new method employed by the Israeli army for killing people in southern Lebanon.
The Iranians are on the case, biting hook, line and sinker into this marketing-stunt-gone-awry by an Israeli newspaper. The U.N. is even testing the helium in the balloons. Yourish has the yuck.
