Radical Islam is older than dirt

It  is a misfortune to human nature when religion is given by a conqueror. The Mahometan religion, which speaks only by the sword, acts still upon men with that destructive spirit with which it was founded.” Montesquieu 1639-1755

Free Gilad Shalit

Gilad Shalit

Time for Obamalot to extract a real concession from Hamas before expecting Israel to do real business with the Palis. Like, at the least, letting the Red Cross visit the kidnapped soldier Gilad, the way it does duly-convicted and imprisoned Palestinian criminals.

Touring the Golan Heights

One of the places Snoopy and I were planning to visit in October was the Golan Heights. Now he’s recovering from a heart attack and I’m trying to decide whether I’m still adventurous enough at sixty-six to go there alone.

Fortunately, there’s always Michael Totten, and his good reporting, editing and picture-taking. This piece of his on the Golan both encourages me to go and makes me realize that I don’t have to. Thanks to the Web, and its undercutting of the old mass media gatekeepers, I can get a feel for the place without leaving home.

I used to donate money to Michael before he went to work for Pajamas Media. Then I got to the bottom of his piece and discovered he still needs contributions. I sent him ten bucks. If you like the piece you should consider it, too. It’s much cheaper than a trip.

UPDATE:  Snoop returns to posting. He’s just going to be a lot slower for a while.

Palestinian rocket rain

While our feckless, raised-as-a-Muslim president and his lying secretary of state (“I was under fire in Bosnia!”) keep pushing Israel to negotiate with the Palestinians (and Time magazine, part of their court media, runs cover stories saying Israel doesn’t care about peace), the Palestinian rockets keep falling on Israel proper. Including a mortar shell the other day that landed near a kindergarten. How long are our nitwit pols and their media enablers going to allow this to go on? If history is any guide, as long as they’re on the public teat.

“No compromise with the main purpose, no peace till victory, no pact with unrepentant wrong.”

Say a prayer for…

Rare reader and longtime blogging pal Snoopy-the-Goon in Israel had a heart attack today. His son emailed me about it and said a stent had been put in the offending artery and the recovery seems to be going okay.

He also advised I should cancel my plans to come visit them in October, but I’m going to think about that before I do it. I might book a hotel and plan to take buses, etc. Maybe pay a short visit to the patient. In the meantime, please say a prayer for Snoop’s continuing recovery.

Home protection

A friend who has a license-to-carry—mainly because he’s in the diamond business—was the other evening extolling the virtues of the AK-47 for home protection. I said what do you want that peasant gun for, when you could have a nice M-4?

Upon which he began a woeful tale of reduced powder in the 5.56 cartridges, and why the 7.62 has more stopping power. Nevertheless, I like the Tavor TAR-21, made by Israeli Weapons Industry Ltd., much better. Compact enough to fit under the night stand, too.
