Target shooting: Getting worse

I figure it’s a faulty sight picture. I’d say the sights were off except that they’re fixed, so that’s impossible. Last week I hit the head of my paper Jihadi four times out of six with our .38 Smith & Wesson police special revolver.

Today at our weekly target shoot at Red’s in South Austin, I had trouble getting all six in the area over his right shoulder. Sheesh.

Mr. B. was likewise challenged by the .38 and our Ruger semi-auto .22 pistol with his aiming points of the center mass and diamond targets. I was more successful with the .22, but by all rights it ought to translate to the .38 and it didn’t. Two steps forwards and one back, quoth Mr. B. Sounds about right.

One bright spot: four nubile college girls showed up to talk about possibly renting a Glock and having at the targets for the first time. After some instruction of course. Red’s is, after all, the home of the Austin branch of the  Sure Shots, the Women’s Pistol League of Texas.

“You mean we get to hold it?” one of them squealed as the clerk went to fetch their prospective 9mm. As the bumper stickers say: Don’t mess with Texas women.

Heavy rain

Another holiday, another flood. Looks like. Heavy rain started around 2 a.m. and has continued off and on. Our goofy gutters are overwhelmed, as usual. I expect to see the back forty’s waterfall materialize before long. Good thing the sandbags are still in place from Halloween. A strong El Nino will prompt that.

At least it will take Mr. B.’s mind off the Luby’s Thanksgiving disaster. Food wasn’t very good. Like a school lunchroom, Mr. B. said, and you can imagine how a high schooler feels about school lunchrooms. Its only virtue was that it was cheap and the pie was good. For Xmas, it will be Threadgill’s for sure.

Texas first: soft rocket landing

Blue Origin, the private space launch company that operates off I-10 near Van Horn in far West Texas, has finally done it: launched a rocket 62 miles high and then brought it back to a soft landing.

The dream of science fiction since forever should dramatically reduce the costs of space flight. And we have Jeff Bezos, a co-founder of Amazon, to thank. Best way to do that would be to shop at Amazon today and every day.

Bye, bye Confederates

I suppose it was inevitable. Especially in a largely liberal town like Austin. Rewriting history certainly isn’t uncommon elsewhere.

So it’s soon goodbye to Lee, Lanier, Johnston, Reagan and, possibly, Travis. All the names of local elementary and high schools. Although Travis is the Alamo personified and more about Texas history than slavery per se. But slavery is the issue du jour. Lee, Lanier, Johnston and Reagan being slave owners as well as Confederates.

Ironically, it was Travis’s slave Joe that brought us the most complete version of William Barrett’s death, having witnessed it, seeing as how his master had brought him along to the mission-cum-fort for what turned out to be his last stand.

Nevertheless, WBT could be next. When revisionism really gets going, no history is safe for long.

One I wish they would change is the residential street named Malvern Hill in South Austin. Some developer’s idea of commemoration, I suppose, though the battle by that name was a sizable Confederate defeat in 1862. Naw. Too obscure. Besides, in the current climate, a Confederate defeat would be a good thing.

Shooting Sunday

If I can get Mr. B. up, we’re going target shooting again this morning. We’re getting better, with the Ruger .22 semi-auto and my old .38 Smith & Wesson revolver. He likes the latter best, finally getting used to the double-action trigger. Says it looks more menacing than the Ruger.

I like the way the .38 smokes in the aftermath of each round. Mostly from the cylinder rather than the barrel, but I’ll take it. Now to see if we can get most of our rounds in the center, though center mass is pretty good. Just like to get more accurate. Before we move up to a 1911 and its bigger kick.

UPDATE:  I love the smell of cordite in the morning. Heh. Lots of center-mass for Mr. B. and most of my .38 rounds in the silhouette’s head. Good work. Chatted about possible dove and deer hunting next fall and winter.

A rainy winter ahead

A strong El Nino tends to bring lots of rain to Central Texas, and meteorologists say the latest El Nino is continuing to grow stronger.

“The forecaster consensus remains nearly unchanged, with the expectation that this El Niño could rank among the top three strongest episodes as measured by the 3-month SST departures in the Niño 3.4 region going back to 1950.”

knockouts

Not more of our usual antiques, but the new Knockouts which bloom year-round in Central Texas. We have seven eight red and yellow ones alternating along the back fence.
