UT can’t withhold records

“Nice try hiding behind the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to shield evidence of favoritism in admissions, UT-Austin.”

Texas AG Ken Paxton has slapped down the U’s administration in its fight against its own board of regents. And though his opinion isn’t binding, it’s a forecast of what will happen in court to what an old friend used to call the University of Texas at Inter-regional, i.e. Interstate-35.

Open carry of swords

I concur with Andy of MyOldRV who says openly carrying a gun merely warns any possible attackers ahead of time to come up with a stronger strategy and tactics .

Ah, but swords. A rapier, I think, would be a nice everyday accouterment to hang on the hip. A saber would be even better but being longer (and curved) it might be harder to deal with.

Open carry of swords, that’s the ticket. And Bowie knives.

Winner of the Garland cartoon contest

MoAtta

Juan Williams accused Pamela Geller of causing the deaths of two people in Texas… This was after two Islamic terrorists linked to ISIS were shot dead outside a cartoon drawing contest.”

Mr. Williams and his cronies, including Little Barry in the White House, would prefer we all kept quiet. So, like Mo Atta told the passengers on 9/11, we’ll be okay. Me, I think Ms Geller is to be congratulated for ridding the planet of two scumbags.

The cartoon is by Bosch Fawstin, the winner of Geller’s cartoon drawing contest. Which lured the scum to their deaths, which Mr. Williams wants us to mourn.

UPDATE:  Turns out there was some confusion by the Volokh Conspiracy (whom I copied here) over which of Fawstin’s cartoons won the prize. The above is not the actual winner, which is here, though I think the above is much the better of the two.

A new marijuana blog

And it’s not just because of all the states and cities legalizing its use. No, the new Cannabis Law Prof Blog is more about enforcement of the drug laws (particularly the federal ones) still banning its use, sale, etc.

For reasons such as these details from a 2013 report by the American Civil Liberties Union:

“The report finds that between 2001 and 2010, there were over 8 million marijuana arrests in the United States, 88% of which were for possession. Marijuana arrests have increased between 2001 and 2010 and now account for over half (52%) of all drug arrests in the United States, and marijuana possession arrests account for nearly half (46%) of all drug arrests.”

Smokers are easy to catch, allowing the drug police plenty of leisure while still  making their quotas. And the arrests fall disproportionately on blacks, though their use is about on a par with whites. Maybe more blacks spend more time on the street where the cops can see them toking.

“Such racial disparities in marijuana possession arrests exist in all regions of the country, in counties large and small, urban and rural, wealthy and poor, and with large and small Black populations. Indeed, in over 96% of counties with more than 30,000 people in which at least 2% of the residents are Black, Blacks are arrested at higher rates than whites for marijuana possession.”

That the new blog is edited by a law professor at Texas A&M University is also a plus. Gig ’em, Ags. 😉

Record rainfall for the date

Three and a third inches by 11 p.m. for Austin’s official national weather station at Camp Mabry, according to KXAN meteorologists. It’s a record for May 5.

More than two dozen  low-water crossings across Travis County are closed , including West 45th Street at Shoal Creek, due to high, rapidly-moving water which can sweep cars and trucks away before the occupants know it.

And there’s a chance of more rain each day through the weekend.

Jihad in Garland

I have to say that running a public contest to see who could draw the most infuriating cartoon of Mighty Mo wasn’t all that bright. But, of course, it shouldn’t have drawn gunfire from Muslim nutjobs or their hangers-on.

Best of recovery to the security guard who was shot (he seems to have been released from the hospital already) and condolences to the innocent for whatever lasting stress the wouldbe killers may have caused them.

As for the slain Jihadis, well, they surely got what they deserved. They shouldn’t have messed with Texas.

UPDATE:  The 1st Place tie in the cartoon contest. Heh.

AND:  It’s a bit academic why Elton Simpson, one of the dead Mofos, wasn’t put away in 2010 by the FBI. Fart, Barf & Itch didn’t do a good job. Where have we heard that before. Happily, he’s a dead one now.

MORE:  Simpson’s skipping prison apparently had more to with the judge than the FBI, says Sultan Knish: “Judge Mary H. Murguia, a Clinton appointee who has been bandied about as a possible Obama Supreme Court nominee, chose to believe a claim by his public defender that when he was taped talking about Jihad, it might have meant ‘an internal struggle to maintain faith’, instead of killing non-Muslims.” Liberals are so credulous. They keep the Jihadis laughing up their sleeves.

Israel BDS opposed by UTexas student assembly

Earlier this spring, a Palestinian student group at the University of Texas tried to get the school’s student assembly to urge the university to sell stock it owns in five corporations the group claimed “facilitate in the oppression of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel.”

The group wanted UT to join the University of California whose student government voted 11-1 in February in favor of the Israel BDS (boycott, divest, & sanctions) movement. Instead, “after weeks of contentious debate,” according to the Daily Texan student newspaper, the UT assembly voted 23-11 against the idea.

Not that approval would have had any practical effect as the university investors have long said they don’t use political or social issues in their decisions. Likewise the California board of regents opposes such consideration and will ignore the UC vote. But a BDS victory at UT, as did the victory at UC, could have had large political implications.

The accused corporations at UT: Alstom, Cemex, Hewlett-Packard, Proctor & Gamble, and United Technologies.
