The Deep State is real—and dangerous

“In Washington a picture is emerging of an eerie and lack-of-candor railroading of Donald Trump conducted by the likes of James Comey and Andrew McCabe. The abuse of power by government officials who refuse to acknowledge the authority of the duly-elected chief executive is not limited to the FBI.”

By no means. It also includes national security bureaucrats “who use secretly collected information to shape or curb the actions of elected officials…”

They are trying to overturn the legitimate choice of 63 million Americans.

Checkers’ surgery

Barbara Ellen’s beloved cat Checkers is “eating” again, through a tube through his esophagus, put there by a vet who pulled five of his teeth, one of which was broken at the gum line and another that was so decayed the root was showing.

The pain must have been intense and had apparently shut down his desire to eat. Such that he had lost almost ten pounds in two months.

Now he’s lively again, his tummy filled with food via the tube and his post-op pain soothed by morphine every twelve hours. The tube will be removed by the end of the week and he can get back to eating normally. Hopefully Checkers will not miss the morphine too much.

2.5 million defensive gun uses a year

That’s an incredible number. Even more incredible is that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which sampled 12,870 defensive cases back in the 1990s, chose to hide it and their extrapolated estimate of 2.5 million such uses every year.

“Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck conducted the most thorough previously known survey data on the question in the 1990s. His study, which has been harshly disputed in pro-gun-control quarters, indicated that there were more than 2.2 million such defensive uses of guns (DGUs) in America a year.

“Now Kleck has unearthed some lost CDC survey data on the question. The CDC essentially confirmed Kleck’s results. But Kleck didn’t know about that until now, because the CDC never reported what it found…CDC’s results, then, imply that guns were used defensively by victims about 3.6 times as often as they were used offensively by criminals.”

Government, the word for things we do together. Except when we don’t because the bureaucrats prefer to hide the truth for political reasons.

UPDATE: Known-wolf killers such as the Waffle House shooter get the publicity while the defensive uses remain hidden from view. Thanks for nothing, CDC!

Volokh has a new roost

The Volokh Conspiracy, an interesting blog about legal cases and decisions, has moved from its four-year piggyback on the WaPo to a new roost at Reason magazine. The reasons are several but the PC police seem to have been factored into them:

“More importantly, we want the decision whether or not to redact to be ours, not the Post’s. This is so for the familiar vulgarities, but also as to similar decisions about what to do with quoting incidents that involve offensive epithets, allegedly offensive team names and band names, allegedly improper use of pronouns to refer to various people, and much more. Once we acknowledge that it’s proper to constrain our accurate reporting about one kind of offensive word, how would we effectively be able to defend our right to judge how to report on incidents involving other words?”

Goodbye Mediacrats. Hello to the new roost here.

Happy 70th Birthday Israel

A poem by Yehuda Amichai on my favorite city in all the world:

Jerusalem is low, crouching between her mountains,

Not like New York, for example.

Two thousand years ago, she crouched

In a wonderful lunge.

All other cities ran great

Circles in the arena of time, won or lost,

And died. Jerusalem remained in a lunge:

All victories are taut and concealed in her. All defeats.

Her strength grows and her breath is calm

For a race even outside the arena.

Why weren’t the Davidians spared?

“Four ATF agents and five Davidians died in the initial gunfight [outside Waco] and another Davidian was killed later that day [25 years ago]. After a 51-day siege, 76 Davidians [including women and children] died when the compound went up in flames on April 19.”

They weren’t spared because of those four dead ATF agents. I was a reporter on the picket line at the time and so I know that it was widely understood (if rarely spoken) by the news media as well as most everyone else that if you killed a cop you paid with your life. Today it’s pretty much open season on cops.
