Roots of Trump Derangement Syndrome

“The progressives felt themselves on the verge of turning America into a gigantic echo-chamber. Except for tiny pockets of resistance, they control the universities. They dominate the mainstream media and mainstream culture. They had the Supreme Court as of Obergefell. And they had a Democratic administration ready to cut off funding to schools that didn’t let boys-who-say-they-are-girls into the girls’ room.

“And into this triumphalist delirium, there intruded the raucous Queens accent of Donald J. Trump, the most politically incorrect contestant for national office since Andrew Jackson. The progressives have responded by retreating into deep fantasy, with tutus and pussy hats (which, one might add, are a micro-aggression against transwomen who do not have vaginas, and should be replaced by a hat that depicts a part of the anatomy that everyone has).

“Trump did not merely derail the progressive political agenda. He turned the lights out on the Holodeck and left the snowflake-identities of the self-inventors to melt in the wholesome light of day, and the progressives will never stop raging against him.”

Bob Dylan was never my poet

I sorta liked “A Hard Rain Is A’Gonna Fall,” but otherwise. Folk music was a joke. And the hard rain didn’t really fall. LBJ retired to the ranch. The only people who got really wet were us veterans of his fuckedup war. Howsomeever.

“We are not a folk but a church, and our native music is church music–the Battle Hymn with its quotation of Isaiah 63, for example, or “The Year of Jubilo,” whose hymnal roots I analyzed here. Our popular poetic language is that of our national epic, the King James Bible. We sang the go-to-meeting songs of the Methodists and other Protestant denominations. This informed the spirituals of black slaves who gave us our first original art form. American folk music? Gospel is as close as we get to such a concept.”

The most authentic thing Dylan ever did—besides going electric—was to refuse to go accept his Nobel Prize for Literature. He knew he was a phony.

Stupid, or lazy, Millennials

“Now Americans aged 16 to 24 rank at the bottom of a 22-country evaluation of numeracy, literacy, and technological problem-solving.

“Poor student performance should be no surprise: America’s family structure is falling apart. Nearly 30% of non-Hispanic white children are born out of wedlock, as well as 53% of Hispanics and 73% of African-Americans. When Reagan took office, 18% of all American births were to unmarried mothers. By 2014 the figure was above 40%.

“Catch-up ball doesn’t begin to describe our predicament. We need nothing short of a great national turnaround. There are two Republican candidates who made clear from the outset that it isn’t business as usual — Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Another Romney wouldn’t be relevant.”

And Spengler, aka David Goldman, prefers Our Ted. Millennials, however, will almost certainly vote for the Hildabeast whose policies will continue the decline.

Spengler: Confederate flag makes us stupid

Well, our Little Barry Hussein is actually very happy to have us debating the Confederate flag and the 150-year-old Civil War rather than arguing about his corrupt administration. It’s the old political sleight-of-hand. Quick, look over there!

But Spengler (the pen name of one of my favorite writers David P. Goldman) is down with that. Like Diana West, he sees Americans being stupid and comes up with a reason. She considers it a result of the moral relativism birthed in the 1960s, aided, not incidentally, by the body of lies our federal government had been telling since 1933. When, in fact, FDR’s administration was so thoroughly penetrated by Soviet agents as to  make the New Deal a Communist front and the Greatest Generation perfect dupes. But very little of that was known until several years after secret government files were released in 1995.

Spengler prefers to see the reason for our stupidity in post-war Washington failing to utterly crush the old Confederacy. Well, they did put Jefferson Davis in a damp prison cell for two years. But Gen. Grant was altogether too nice about everything else, apparently. Spengler says the feds should have banned the flags, the monuments and every other manifestation of the slave-owning South. They’d already burned most of the mansions.

He also hates Gone With The Wind and thinks it should be banned. Although any careful reading of the book shows it does not glorify the Confederacy even if the movie does. Spengler admits to never having read the book and being unable to stand even a few minutes of the movie. He hated Scarlett returning to her mansion at the end. “I wanted Scarlett to pick cotton until her fingers fell off,” he writes.

Now that’s irritation. I rather prefer West’s reasoning but I can see Goldman’s point, too. And I say that as a descendant of Rebel soldiers. I admire the soldiers enormously but always have thought the Confederacy sucked. And banning things is always counterproductive. They just go underground and develop more power than before.

And something else I noticed growing up. So long as segregation was the law of the land, the Confederacy was a big topic of conversation in the South. It was a parlor trick among Southern males to know even the smallest details of the war.

When the topic was Gettysburg, for instance, and someone said “Okay, where was he?” you were supposed to know the speaker was referring to JEB Stuart and his missing cavalry. When segregation began to die after 1964, so did most of these conversations. As if the one had supported the other all along.

Hamas needs destroying

If Israel lets Hamas live to fight another day, or gives in to Lurch’s and Wormtongue’s insistence that they do (like the Worm succeeded in twisting Jerusalem’s arm to do back in 2012), the fire next time will be devastating.

Iran and Syria already have GPS-guided rockets which Hamas surely wants and keeps trying to get smuggled in by land or by sea. If they survive this confrontation, they will surely get them, perhaps even learn to make them as they already do some of their rockets now, and then they will: hit selected government and popular shopping targets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv with pinpoint barrages of so many rockets Iron Dome can’t cope. Then go on, say, to wipe out a loaded airliner waiting for takeoff at Ben Gurion Airport.

Of course, the IDF could then pile on and destroy them. It should do so now. Waiting will only insure greater casualties on both sides. Israel lost so-called “world opinion” years ago. Really, the leftist news media, academia and other political radicals such as the Dictator’s Club called the United Nations. It’s not worth risking the future for public relations nonsense.

Hamas needs destroying: leader by leader, rocket by rocket, tunnel by tunnel.

Now. Nothing less will do.

UPDATE: Author and former Israel ambassador to U.S. Michael Oren says: “…to send an unequivocal message to terrorist organizations and their state sponsors everywhere, Israel must be permitted to crush Hamas in the Gaza Strip.”

Permitted? Who could stop them but themselves?

MORE:  Wormtongue and the UN move to save Hamas after Lurch’s attempt failed. Only question now seems to be will Bibi defy them long enough to finish destroying the attack tunnels?

Crimea river

I still say the whole Crimea thingie is a bore. It mainly gives the snooze media something to do that doesn’t involve working. And, as Spengler details below, the American response thus far will hurt us (and Israel) far more than it will the Russians.

“Granted that hypocrisy is the mother’s milk of both domestic and international politics, but the outcry from Europe and the United States over the Russian seizure of Crimea really is beyond the pale….

“As to forceful detachment of territory from a sovereign state, Kosovo was separated from Serbia through the U.S. and European bombing of Serbia until the Serbs agreed…

“If Russia were to place an embargo on oil and particularly gas exports to Europe, the Europeans would run out of reserves in two months and then the European economy would shut down.  Russia, in contrast, would merely lose $7.5 billion of revenues.  U.S.-Russian trade is tiny so that trade sanctions by the U.S. would be meaningless…

“The elder statesmen who won the Cold War…are trying in vain to inject a note of sanity into the clown show that passes for American foreign policy on both sides of the aisle…Putin won’t take over…He doesn’t have to. He’ll wait for the West to make an unspeakable mess of Ukraine and then do whatever he wants.”

As Instapundit often says: Our country is in the very best of hands. Not.

Why we can’t appease Iran

“Dying civilizations are the most dangerous, and Iran is dying. Its total fertility rate probably stands at just 1.6 children per female, the same level as Western Europe, a catastrophic decline from 7 children per female in the early 1980s.

“Iran’s present youth bulge will turn into an elderly dependent problem worse than Europe’s in the next generation and the country will collapse. That is why war is likely, if not entirely inevitable.”
