Age is just a number

I laugh every time I see/hear this phrase. Usually written/spoken by the young. Who have no conception of how hard time will kick their firm little ass.

It’s also a favorite with poorly-paid young women seeking sugar daddies on the dating sites. How would I know? I joined a couple, including  Match.com, to assess my prospects.

Met one nice local woman already, a grandmother my age who knows what time can do. She’s a newcomer to the area but already getting acclimated. We’re going target shooting next week.

But also have met a bunch of big boobed scammers who seem to trade come-on lines. Like age is just a number. I’d love to be there when they wake and find old age has snuck up on them. Not to mention gravity.

Driving or texting?

It’s not what you think. Not another one of those Don’t Text and Drive sermons.

It’s the observation of the father of one of Mr. B.’s chums. He noted that his 16-year-old son has no particular interest in getting his driver’s license. It reminded me of how slowly Mr. B. has been about moving through the end of his driving lessons. Putting the last ones off. Doing them once a week or every ten days.

My friend said when he and I were this age, we needed that driving license to get out of the house, to see friends, to go to the movies, to get out from under the parental thumb. Whereas nowadays, he said, they have private phones to talk and text with, Netflix to stream movies on, Xbox to play multi role player games with their friends, while talking to them on headsets, amid all the comforts of home.

Why go out? Why drive? Especially in Austin’s godawful traffic?

I suppose they’ll be too old for the real-life virtual reality games that are coming. That generation might be even less interested in getting a driver’s license. If unpopular public transportation can’t save the environment from the automobile, maybe the iphone and the Internet  can, eh?

The truth of house cats

Glorious March rain

Soaking, not flooding, at least not at the rancho. Via Bob Rose at LCRA:

“Additional waves of rain showers and thunderstorms will likely continue moving from south to north across the region tonight, Thursday and Friday.  Our weather pattern is being influenced by a strong trough of low pressure centered over northern Mexico.  Waves of low pressure circulating around the large low are flowing north into Texas, producing periods of rain showers and isolated thunderstorms.”

Only problem is the pool is filling to the brim. Gonna have to empty some of it tomorrow morning or afternoon. Once a pool fool, always… The bluebonnets, which are already appearing on area highways, are going to be glorious this year.

Cat toys

This will be a recurring feature now that we have been adopted by a cat. We’re not naive enough to believe that we adopted him.

This first featured item, the so-called “famous” Bergen Turbo Scratcher (well it has had 3,468 reviews at Amazon, 85 percent of them 4 stars or better), has been a big hit with Senor Gato, our orange male tabby also known as Pumpkin.

We’ve also been pleased—especially as it only cost a third of what we paid for a carpet-covered scratching post he’s completely ignored for a month now. Not that the little white ball part of the gizmo is getting any notice, mind you, but he’s torn the cardboard scratch pad to shreds. When he isn’t doing that, and eating the cardboard shards, he likes to recline on the pad and snooze.

In the course of shopping for a replacement pad, I even discovered you can use a butter knife to pry up the old one which reveals that the opposite side is fresh and ready to go. Five stars for the “famous” Bergen Turbo Scratcher!

UPDATE: Forgot to mention the scratcher comes with a small baggie of catnip which SG seems to love. You sprinkle it on the cardboard. That might be the reason for the scratcher’s success in general and with with him.

He could, indeed, but he probably won’t. Our Pumpkin is litter-box trained and content to use it, so long as it’s kept clean. But he has enjoyed discovering new prospects for observation, such as the roofs of our cars. The only thing missing is mice. Perhaps we should introduce a few.
