A Bavarian fairy-tale castle? Nope. A Texas one. Actually, the old Romanesque Revival, granite and sandstone, Dallas County courthouse. Photographer Rick Turner has a better, but copyrighted, version here.

Former newspaper colleague turned author Mike Cox has this good column at TexasEscapes about how, because email is killing the post office, it’s time to remember some of the fabled ones.
Because they will, in all probability, soon be vanishing. Strangely, Mike leaves out the story of how Dime Box got its name. Aided, in part, allegedly, by its onetime lack of a post office.

Of all the B&B’s in the Hill Country, Gasthaus Meyer is the only one I’m aware of that began as a stagecoach stop more than a hundred years ago. Today it’s a collection of buildings, most old, but a few new, backed up to Cypress Creek in the historic little town of Comfort. Mrs. Charm and I will be spending some time there in mid-March, leaving Mr. B. at the rancho with his grandma down from Fort Worth. Something we used to do every spring before he was born. Just in time for the wildflowers, we hope.

Full military honors (and then some) for the funeral and memorial service for the Vietnam veteran–who was murdered by a suicide terrorist while on the job.

Could be. After Sunday’s high in the low 80s (yep), the temp fell to 40 by midnight at the rancho. Supposed to be colder tonight and then up to an inch is in our forecast for Tuesday. And Accuweather’s Joe Bastardi says:
“By the way, this looks like the worst last week of Feb weather I can remember in Texas since I have been studying maps. It is interesting how late snowfalls are getting more common there, and earlier snowfalls too. If Dallas misses Tuesday IT’S CAUSE WACO AND COLLEGE STATION GET IT! In other words they miss to the south.”
Just not this far south, if you please. Although Mr. B. would be thrilled..
UPDATE: The forecast changed this morning to a ninety percent chance of snow Tuesday and the amount was upped to between two and four inches. Then, this afternoon, it was back to one-half to one inch.

Is his CPAC straw poll win important? Sure, to his loud and loyal supporters. Otherwise, not so much. After all, he didn’t win a single Republican primary or caucus in 2008.
UPDATE: The best speech at CPAC? Probably George Will here in three parts.
