Pool fools part 3

This time we’re noticing that only three of the pop-up water movers in the in-floor cleaning system are popping up and squirting water. It became obvious when the usual fall supply of acorns and leaves began lingering in mid-pool instead of being swept across the bottom toward the drains in the deep end where we could easily scoop them up. Also the green algae have been returning.

This site suggests we check the pressure first, then the filtration system, and last the pop-ups themselves. The pressure is the same it’s always been. So the issue may be in this rather complicated-looking apparatus. Meanwhile, I got one of the pop-ups out of the floor and discovered that its rubber seal was weakening, to the point where the black color smeared off on my fingers. I need to get the rest out to check them.

And, wouldn’t you know it, once again, there’s a hurricane off the Baja threatening big rains here by the end of the week.

Texas-OU

Should be quite a game this morning. Just hope the Longhorns don’t start off slow like they’ve done a couple of times this year. Dig a hole deep enough and they might not get out of it. Especially with WR Ryan Broyles back in the Zero U lineup.

Tickled to learn from the daily that the land grabber’s calm QB Sam Bradford, last year’s Heisman winner, plays the cello. Surely a first for a college quarterback. And what’s with Colt wearing glasses now? Hope Sam doesn’t get hurt again, but a lot of QB hurries on him from Sergio Kindle and Sam Acho would be good. Go get’em, Colt!

Hook’em and, uh, OU sucks.

UPDATE:  OU 6, TX 3 at the half. Sorry to see Sam reinjure his shoulder early in the first quarter. But OU defense is keeping TX from a touchdown. Both have fumbled twice. Penalties all over. According to my favorite announcers at KVET-FM, it’s the lowest-scoring first half of the rivalry.

FINAL: Texas wins a grinding game 16-13. Not a pretty one for Colt or Shipley, and way too many play-hindering penalties. But the defense was key, the running game was huge and it’s nice to see the win.

Aurora

Don’t recall where I got this, but it’s in honor of David Nelson, an old OCS classmate in MA, who awoke this morning to thirty-four degrees and heavy snow. As he says: "Good infantry weather!"

The hypocritcal NFL

Unless, of course, those initials really do stand for the Negro Football League. In which case, the other N-word works for them, I guess. Otherwise

Barry’s nobel violates the Constitution

I’d seen this argument before but not including the Constitution’s full text:

Article I, Section 9, of the Constitution, the emolument clause, clearly stipulates: "And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State."

Nor is the money his to give away. Barry thus can’t legally accept either, especially since they were intended to influence his future actions. Course his party is in control of Congress, so they could consent for him if they want to.

The independent Texas electricity grid

Long may it wave, even in the face of invitations to join the East and West grids to extend the reach of renewable energy sources. Looks good on paper, maybe, but it’s a bad idea when you consider that we are never struck by brownouts and blackouts occurring elsewhere (not to mention being immune from the political whims of federal regs over rates, terms and conditions of transmission), and we already lead the nation in wind generation. Stay independent, ERCOT.

Ringworld, again

I’m always a sucker for a new rendition of Ringworld, one of the most memorable series I’ve ever read.
