Texas vs UCLA

UCLA has Texas 13 to 3 at the half, in one of the worst Texas games I’ve seen in many years. Four Texas turnovers were bad enough, but QB Garrett Gilbert seems stuck on short-yardage passes or incomplete long ones. Plus the offensive line isn’t protecting him and the defense can’t seem to throttle the UCLA running game. I’ll be surprised if Texas pulls out a win on this one.

UPDATE. They didn’t. UCLA creamed ’em 34 to 12. The second half boos from the Texas fans reported by AP were well-deserved. It’s heretical, but I really think they ought to replace Gilbert with his backup. (Chris Simms, that’s who GG reminds me of. Arrgh.) Course they first have to find some receivers who won’t drop the ball. And an offensive line to protect the new quarterback.

Alamo Bowl, here they come. If they’re lucky.

MORE: From the daily’s sportswriter Kirk Bohls’ conclusions on the game:

“They are a young team that can’t run, can’t block, can’t catch, doesn’t have anyone remotely resembling a big-time, playmaking quarterback yet, makes horrible decisions on special teams and decides not to tackle when momentum heads to the exits.”

And their next two games are against Oklahoma and Nebraska. Lordy.

AND:  Inevitably, Texas fell from its No. 7 perch in the AP media poll to No. 21. Also from No. 4 to No. 16 in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

Beating Oklahoma (No. 8 in the media poll) and Nebraska (No. 6 in the media) would elevate Texas in the rankings again, but neither seems likely now.

Texas vs Texas Tech

A wild first half left it 14-14. The Horns had a great first quarter and then promptly reversed themselves in the second quarter, with two interceptions and too many penalties for lost yardage. Thought we had another championship team there for a while. Not so sure now at the half. Defense has to develop some consistency. Offense has to protect Gilbert and help him get something going.

UPDATE:  The defense did and the offense did and Texas won 24-14. Way too many penalties, though, but I guess that’s to be expected in an in-state grudge game.

Texas 34, Wyoming 7

The Longhorns had me worried for most of the first half, struggling against a second-rate team. Then I remembered that Wyoming led them at the half in last year’s contest. And then, in the last few minutes of the first half this year, Texas scored a rushing and a passing touchdown. They owned the second half. So there’s hope yet for their beating Texas Tech next week. But they have to score early, too.

Texas 34, Rice 17

Wasn’t a great game. Texas could have played better. QB Garrett Gilbert, too. He had too many under-thrown passes. Hope they do much better against Tech after Wyoming next week.

These in-state games can be murder, though, even from a perennial also-ran like Rice. The undermutts just try harder when they’re playing Texas. Course Rice’s last touchdown came against the Texas second-string.

UPDATE:  The daily headlined it: Ho-Hum Horns. No kidding. Mack Brown betrayed his irritation in the ESPN story (link above) and he let more out for the daily (“I’ve got to continue to work on my patience”). So. Wyoming next. Should be another pushover. Then Texas Tech, which should not be easy at all.

Texas celebrity sighting

Saw Bum Phillips this afternoon at a restaurant in  Goliad, on the way down to Port A. Except for the two in-ear hearing aids in his ears the former coach of the former Houston Oilers looked younger than his 80-something years.

No, he was not wearing his trademark cowboy hat. But one was painted on the passenger-side door of his truck. Right atop a drawing of a football. I heard the cashier tell him “Thanks, coach,” when he paid for himself and two friends.

Back in the car Mrs. Charm did a quick Google on him on her iPhone and found that he has retired to a horse ranch near Goliad. Imagine running horses at his age.

She also found a Tweet on Barry’s visit to Austin today. It said that Gov. Rick Perry was at the airport to meet him and handed the prez two letters: F and U. Heh.

Big 12 unraveling

I guess Texas wants to play SoCal regularly, as well as have an easier shot at the Rose Bowl. Otherwise why leave the Big 12 (now just 10 teams with the loss of Nebraska and Colorado, and expected to be just six after Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State leave for the Pac 10) unless it’s because the sports media relatively regularly has ignored the Big 12? Money, I know. The usual reason. Hopefully, it will make for some stronger opponents for Texas.

UPDATE:  Nevermind. Seems the Big 12 will be just ten teams, but reduction to six talk was much to-do about nothing much. Media driven, maybe?

Horns to NFL

Congrats to Earl Thomas (Seattle), Sergio Kindle (Baltimore), Lamarr Houston (Oakland), Jordan Shipley (Cincinnati), Roddrick Muckelroy (also Cincinnati), and Colt McCoy (Cleveland).

The daily is sputtering over McCoy, the winningest, etc. being a late, second round pick (long after Bradford and Tebow), but I’m not surprised. I still say he’s injury prone and I think we’ll see that in his (probably short) pro career.
