Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza

zaragozaThe hero of Cinco de Mayo, i.e. the unlikely defeat of the French at Puebla, a wonderful story (the frogs were taking a coffee break when the Mexicans attacked) never better told than here. The general was born near Goliad, where his statue is today. His father was a soldier at the nearby Precidio La Bahia. Looks like the local doves have been at work on his head, however.

Plenty of rain overnight—and almost inside

The strange thing is that TS Hermine, which was forecast to be no more than a depression by the time it swept through Austin was, instead, still a storm. Consequently, we got a lot of rain, and 40 mph winds, and some area creeks are out of their banks, some trees are down and some places are flooded.

More than seven inches of rain at the rancho, so far, with ponding in the back forty, and some threat to the interior of the house which has been overcome  with a makeshift dam and towels to soak up what got through. KVUE’s Mark Murray forecasts that Hermine-the-depression will be well north of us by sunrise, with only lingering showers to spoil Mr. B.’s morning recess at school. So he won”t be happy.

The principle of mediocrity

I love this notion. Just the name is compelling. The mediocre. The average.

More on it here, and here and, uh, here. Heh.

Israel’s one-sided road rage

No Palis hurt, no settlers involved, so no big Western media whoop-de-do. Just more babble about the two-state solution. How’s that for court-media cynicism?

“Yesterday a car carrying a husband and wife – Jewish residents of a Jordan Valley community inside the green line – came under fire from a passing car between Rimonim and Kochav HaShachar in the Binyamin region (located outside the green line).

“The husband (who was driving) was wounded by the gunfire and lost control of the car.  His wife was injured in the subsequent roll-over/crash caused by attack.”

I’m paying more attention to these items, being just about thirty days away from visiting Israel. Altho I’m sure my host and guide, Mr. Goon, will not be taking me anywhere outside the green line.

Via Treppenwitz.

UPDATE:  When they do report on Israel, the increasingly irrelevant court media lies. Not that they didn’t before.

Texas 34, Rice 17

Wasn’t a great game. Texas could have played better. QB Garrett Gilbert, too. He had too many under-thrown passes. Hope they do much better against Tech after Wyoming next week.

These in-state games can be murder, though, even from a perennial also-ran like Rice. The undermutts just try harder when they’re playing Texas. Course Rice’s last touchdown came against the Texas second-string.

UPDATE:  The daily headlined it: Ho-Hum Horns. No kidding. Mack Brown betrayed his irritation in the ESPN story (link above) and he let more out for the daily (“I’ve got to continue to work on my patience”). So. Wyoming next. Should be another pushover. Then Texas Tech, which should not be easy at all.

pumpjackAnother winner from Luling, home of such things as well as lots of watermelons—including a watermelon water tower.

Cold front and rain

The first cold front of the season? Probably. Anyhow, it’s drawing moisture out of the Gulf and producing thunderstorms and steady rain. Over an inch so far at the rancho. Been a fairly wet year. Hope it continues. Had enough drought, after a hot and unusually dry August. But LCRA’s Bob Rose says it’ll return next week.
